EA believes that, if Call of Duty were to leave PlayStation consoles in the future, it would make a great opportunity for the Battlefield franchise. There have been some concerns that, with Microsoft's plans to purchase Activision Blizzard, the Call of Duty franchise could become an Xbox exclusive. While both Sony and Microsoft officials have stated that Call of Duty won't be leaving PlayStation anytime soon, the concern among gamers still persists that the iconic shooter series could eventually only be playable on Xbox and PC.The Battlefield franchise has often been seen as an alternative to Call of Duty. While both games are first-person shooters, they do have plenty of differences, with Battlefield often having a larger scale in terms of the skirmishes players find themselves in. However, recently the Battlefield franchise has produced some entries that haven't been received well. Battlefield 5 faced criticism for its depiction of WW2, while Battlefield 2042 received backlash for its bugs and glitches at launch.RELATED: Battlefield 2042 Reveals What's Coming in the Season 2 Battle PassEA's CEO Andrew Wilson has acknowledged these recent missteps with Battlefield, stating that he doesn't think "[EA] delivered in the last two iterations" of the series. However, Wilson believes that Battlefield could have a great opportunity before it. Speaking during a recent Goldman Sachs event, Wilson said that being "platform agnostic" with Battlefield, meaning that the games hold no true loyalty to Xbox, PC, or PlayStation, is a "tremendous" opportunity in a time when the future of the Call of Duty franchise is slightly uncertain.

While Wilson entertains the prospect of Call of Duty leaving PlayStation behind, as stated, it doesn't seem like this will be happening soon, because Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 will both be available on Sony hardware. If it takes a few years for Call of Duty to move away from PlayStation, though, this gives EA the time to rebuild Battlefield's reputation. Already, it seems that there are big changes coming in the future for Battlefield. Recently, it was announced that Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto would be building a new Battlefield campaign for EA.

While the introduction of a story campaign into a new Battlefield game would be a positive step for EA in rebuilding the reputation of its shooter franchise, many believe that more work needs to be done before Battlefield can be seen as a competitor with Call of Duty Battlefield 2042, to improve that game after its poorly received launch.

Battlefield 2042 is now available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC.
