E3 isn't having a good year. It's not just that Sony and Electronic Arts are passing on the event yet again, it's that the E3 organizing body is struggling to retain its business partnerships at all. The problems at the ESA aren't just external issues, but internal, too. Thursday afternoon saw just the latest example of this, as E3's show floor creative directors, the well-regarded team at iam8bit, announced that it was resigning from the position effective immediately.

"It's with mixed emotions that @iam8bit has decided to resign as Creative Directors of what was to be an evolutionary #E32020 floor experience," reads the first part of iam8bit's resignation message, posted to Twitter. The announcement comes just over a month after the partnership was first announced between the ESA and iam8bit. The ESA had previously said it was partnering with "tastemakers" at iam8bit in order to "reinvigorate the show and, frankly, to shake things up."

No reason for the resignation was provided by iam8bit, beyond the clear message that the team is choosing to resign. If the team is choosing to resign due to the coronavirus, for example, it isn't made explicitly clear. It's just as likely that iam8bit is resigning due to business or creative disagreements.

"We've produced hundreds of gaming + community events and it was a dream to be involved with E3," makes up the bulk of the remaining message from iam8bit. "We wish the organizers the best of luck." There is no further followup from iam8bit beyond their respectful resignation announcement and parting words.

The ESA has remained quiet following the announcement, leaving the status of E3 2020 in question. While the necessity of a creative director to bring E3's show floor together isn't, losing any position three months before a show is certain to have negative ramifications.

iam8bit, for those who aren't familiar, is a creative production company with a diverse skillset. Most familiar gamers will know them for their merchandise shop, where iam8bit sells exclusive products– including limited collector's editions, vinyl soundtracks, art, and apparel. They're also well known in the industry for producing events like parties and art exhibitions. An E3 2020 creatively driven by iam8bit would undoubtedly have been unique and it's a shame that fans will no longer experience that.

E3 2020 is still scheduled to run between June 9 and June 11.
