Traversal is a major part of Dying Light, and its parkour system has been a subject of praise ever since the game released. While Kyle Crane's impressive skills are enough to get players to almost any location in the game, there are some places that he simply can't reach. When it comes to these areas, players are going to need to rely on the grappling hook, but naturally they'll have to unlock it first. Thankfully, unlocking the grappling hook is fairly easy, and doesn't require the player to reach any specific point in the story. Instead, it is tied directly to the player's survivor level.

As players progress through the story of Dying Light, their Survivor Rank will increase. Typically this happens as players help people, complete quests, or win challenges. With each level, the player unlocks some new skill or learns how to an existing skill better, and this is how the grappling hook is unlocked.

The grappling hook in Dying Light is unlocked at Survivor Rank 12, at which point the player should get a grappling hook for use. With it, they can latch onto buildings, walls, the floor, or anything really and quickly pull themselves towards it. The grappling hook can even be used as a weapon, embedding itself in an infected and pulling them towards the player. It's important to realize that this skill does have a cooldown, however, and if players use it too much all at once it will be unavailable for a short while. For this reason, players should use it sparingly.

If the player loses their grappling hook somehow, they can return to the quartermaster to get another one. Though the grappling hook can be dropped for friends in co-op, players without the skill still won't be able to use it, so this isn't an effective way of circumventing the level requirement. Aside from traversing the city faster, one of the most important uses of the grappling hook is for escaping from volatiles in the night. These creatures can easily keep up with Crane if he's simply running away, but the speed of the grappling hook outmatches them if used correctly.

That's all there is to unlocking the grappling hook. For players that want to get their as quickly as possible, the best thing to do is to farm Survivor Rank by completing quests and the like. Eventually the player will reach level 12 and the grappling hook will be theirs to keep. As players continue to level up their Survivor Rank, the skill's cooldown will decrease.

Dying Light is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
