With Dying Light: Definitive Edition, many players might wonder what skills they should invest in. There are a lot of them, but players shouldn’t worry, as it’s quite possible to get most of the skills just through default, and through a natural progression of zombie slaying and mission completion.

10 Freerunning Expert

Perhaps not the most necessary ability for the protagonist, Crane, to master, but a good one nonetheless. Freerunning Expert is a passive skill that can be learned at Agility level 12. It increases general stamina, which means the player can run, climb, jump and swing his weapon for longer.

By having Freerunning Expert, the player won’t have to rely on taking so many breaks to catch their breath. Players can become an expert at freerunning, which is part of the game’s core gameplay. By climbing quicker, and gaining agility faster, the player will be able to safely traverse Harran, and soon head off into the sequel.

9 Stomp

If players get their Power level to 9, they will be able to unlock the Stomp ability. Stomp immediately becomes a useful ability to unlock for players, as it will become their primary method of finishing off the infected. If enemies are knocked down, which is a common occurrence, then players can stomp on their heads and instantly kill them.

This ability is greatly used to avoid having to use weapons, which comes at a cost of durability. It can be used on Biters and Gas Tanks, meaning players can just kick them down and head stomp them like they’re a goomba, and they’re Mario.

8 Camouflage Attack

using camouflage in dying light

Survival level 12 allows players to unlock Camouflage Attack. This passive skill allows players to attack and kill the infected whilst remaining in a camouflaged state, thus, avoiding any aggression of other infected from swarming the player.

With this skill learned, players will be able to cover themselves in the blood of an infected, blend in with them, and become completely ignored by them. Don’t expect this great skill to work on humans, as they can see that the player is just some guy covered in gross blood.

7 Kill Frenzy

By putting levels into Power, at level 11 players can access the Kill Frenzy skill. Throughout the player’s journey in the deadly world of Dying Light, there will be times when they will become overwhelmed, Kill Frenzy encourages the player to embrace this, and fight instead of flight.

For every kill, the player will gain Power points faster for 10 seconds after each kill of an enemy. This will drastically increase their Power gains, and allow them to level up quicker, and obtain more skills. However, enemies like the Demolisher won't help players benefit from Kill Frenzy.

6 Conserve Weapons

Dying Light features a controversial mechanic in most survival games, which is weapon durability. The more a weapon is used, the less effective it becomes. Sometimes the weapon needs to be repaired to cause damage, or in some games, the weapon will break and is unable to be fixed. With Power level 6, players will find the skill Conserve Weapon.

Conserve Weapon makes it so that melee weapons use less durability, and they become sturdier and more efficient. This risk-free investment makes it so that players won’t be so desperate to find a new weapon, and it could very well save their life.

5 Slide

sliding skill in dying light

Part of what makes Dying Light so fun is its use of parkour. Dying Light will have the player traversing the rooftops, and jumping over obstacles to get away from the infected hordes. With Agility at level 3, players can unlock Slide. It's useful for avoiding players that choose to 'Be the Zombie', too.

Slide counts as stamina recovery time, which means that the player is almost always on the move in some quick way. Slide can help the player to get under obstacles, and will also help knock down zombies that are in the way, like a tackle. Through effective use of Slide, players will be able to maintain their full freerunning speed.

4 Vault Stun

freerunning first person in dying light

Agility Level 4 will unlock Vault, which allows for players to jump over zombies, players, and other humans. With 4 more levels into Agility, players will still be able to jump over their enemies, but with the upgraded bonus of stunning them for 5 seconds.

Vault Stun is more effective than the simple Vault, as although both have great versatility in moving throughout the city streets, with Vault Stun, the enemy that the player jumped over is delayed by 5 seconds. This can make the difference between a route-altering chase.

3 Forward Roll

Parkour can be a dangerous game. Even more dangerous than the hordes of infected, and hostile humans. Gravity can keep us grounded, but that can somewhat make gravity an enemy too. Players can find themselves in fatal situations if they misread a jump from a building, or slip off the edge.

With an Agility level of 9, players can unlock Forward Roll. This can be activated by pressing the crouch button just before hitting the ground. This allows the player to roll forward, absorb some of the damage of the fall, and prevent those that could otherwise be fatal.

2 Dropkick

One of the most fun abilities in video games is always a dropkick. The sheer power of putting one’s entire weight into a kick, and watching an enemy go flying as if gravity is a thing of the past is always a good way to get laughs. With Agility level 4, players can unlock the Dropkick skill.

Players can knock down most enemies, including the Night Hunter. The Dropkick can also be utilized alongside the Pyza Suit to perform a Glide Kick, which allows them to traverse further through the sky. It’s also a great ability just to clumsily knock enemies down and hear their wails, especially from rooftops.

1 Grappling Hook

using a grappling hook in dying light

Perhaps the most fun skill in the game, Grappling Hook is a survival skill unlocked at Survival level 12. This skill unlocks the grappling hook equipment, which can be used to traverse the environment to great effect and freedom. Losing the grappling hook can be annoying, but another can be obtained from the Quartermaster.

Players will be able to swing from lampposts to buildings, and travel across the city at great speeds, saving time in getting to their destination. Grappling hooks are also a great way to avoid any unwanted confrontation from the ground below.

Dying Light is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
