For the past two years, Polish developer Techland has been quietly working on Dying Light 2, a direct sequel to 2015's parkour-centric, zombie open-world game. Announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC during E3 2018, it appears that Dying Light 2 won't be coming to Nintendo Switch, but the developer has teased another surprise for the Nintendo console later this year.

During an interview with WCCFTech at the Reboot Develop Blue 2019 conference last month, Techland's Chief Technical Officer, Pawel Rohleder, spoke about their new Engine, the potential for streaming platforms such as Google Stadia, and whether or not Dying Light 2 would find life on the Nintendo Switch.

Unfortunately for Nintendo Switch owners, Dying Light 2 is being developed on Techland's newest evolution of the C-Engine, which doesn't support Nintendo's latest console. Despite the success of third-party games like Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch, this wouldn't be the first time the Nintendo Switch has been skipped due to the hardware limitations. However, despite Dying Light 2 not coming to the Nintendo Switch, Rohleder did go on to mention that the developer might have a surprise for the Nintendo Switch coming later in the year.

Part of the reason why the new C-Engine doesn't support the Nintendo Switch likely comes down to the number of new features that have been introduced since the original Dying Light. Rohleder stated that Techland has introduced 16 new systems into the engine including a new animation system, UI system, and a new quest system that allows for player choice and consequence.

Techland currently has two projects in development including Dying Light 2, both being developed on the new engine. Due to the significant difference in the power of the Nintendo Switch, the console doesn't fit the developer's focus on photorealism and high technical quality in the AAA space. Rohleder did go on to acknowledge they were thinking about the next generation of consoles.

Despite being relatively quiet since the game's announcement, the official Dying Light 2 Twitter account has confirmed that more information will be revealed during E3 2019. Given that PlayStation will not be making an appearance, Dying Light 2 is expected to be showcased during Microsoft's E3 conference, on the same stage it was originally announced last year.

Dying Light 2 is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
