It's been a long time since fans have heard anything about Dying Light 2, as the game largely stepped away from any kind of spotlight after 2019's E3. There was a pretty extensive gameplay demo from Techland showing off a new zombie-infested world to run and leap throughout, but since the trade show the developer's largely been silent. One of the last bits of official news from the game was from earlier this year, when Techland announced the game was to be delayed indefinitely, and there hasn't been an official update since.

The first game was a pretty sizable hit back in 2015, bringing with it a surprising twist on the zombie/survival horror genre by way of fluid and fast parkour movement. Plus, Dying Light 2 is promising a very ambitious sequel full of interesting concepts like a heavily decision-based narrative that affects the game's world significantly. And yet, with the game still delayed indefinitely, it'd be a safe bet to assume the game's probably not coming out until the beginning of the next console generation.

Dying Light 2 Delayed Indefinitely

It's unfortunate, but toward the end of January of 2020, Techland made the announcement that Dying Light 2 was to be delayed indefinitely. While it was initially supposed to release in the Spring 2020 launch window, CEO Pawel Marchewka stated that Techland needed "more development time to fulfill our vision." Machewka's statement also promised more news would follow from Techland in the following months, but that news never came. Granted, this is also around the time Covid-19 brought the world to a standstill, which presumably affected Techland's development pipeline just as significantly as every other studio.

That being said, as spring and summer of 2020 came and went, there's been little news to come from Techland other than confirmation that Dying Light 2 is still in development. Of course, fans are quick to think the game may be in development hell, even if that's not necessarily true. It's very possible that Covid-19, among other delaying factors, have brought Dying Light 2's development progress down significantly from when it was supposed to release. Frankly, as of October of 2020, it's very possible that Dying Light 2's development has shifted entirely to next-gen development for PS5/Xbox Series X/S.

The Unfortunate Reality of Dying Light 2's Delay

It's a double-edged sword for Dying Light 2, much like any other game that saw a significant delay in 2020. Making sure Dying Light 2 has a stable release is paramount to the game's success, but so is the marketing hype and getting players excited to jump in to the game. The long silence certainly isn't boding well for the game, and if it's releasing within the next four months, then it might be a very quiet launch. However, as long as the game can ramp up marketing and get more people excited about the game quickly, then Dying Light 2 could position itself in a good spot for release. That being said, it's likely still going to be radio silence from Techland until next year.

As for the original Dying Light, that game still continues to receive consistent updates, something that may surprise those who aren't hardcore fans. The game received a sizable standalone expansion entitled "The Following" in 2016, but actually continually received support after that as well. The game has since received multiple additional expansions, a "Bad Blood" battle royale mode, and more recently received another ambitious "Hellraid" expansion a few months ago. The hardcore Dying Light community continues to thrive, despite some ups and downs, and will likely continue to do so until Dying Light 2 eventually releases.

As for when that will be, it's hard to gauge. The original Dying Light launched in January of 2015, but there's no evidence that Dying Light 2 is on track for a similar launch window in 2021. In fact, the lack of information up until now presumably means it'll launch much later in 2021 than Spring. That could easily change, but there's not really a whole lot of time before the launch of the next-gen consoles, or really any time to give the game proper marketing as well. A more confident guess for Dying Light 2's release date would be Summer/Fall 2021. Either way, Techland will likely take its time to properly develop its ambitious sequel for when it's ready.

Dying Light 2 is in development.
