Dying Light 2's official release date might have leaked just hours ahead of a scheduled event. That event promised to provide new details about Dying Light 2, including what some people expected to be the launch date.

After months of silence that had some fans of the original game nervous the sequel was getting canceled, Techland started providing fresh information. Soon, there came a veritable flood of details about what the new protagonist was going to be like, as well as what weapons were going to be used and what some of the potential antagonists might add to the world of Dying Light 2. Then came the tease of a big info dump on Thursday. However, it appears at least one news outlet beat Techland to the punch.

Twitter user Okami posted a screenshot late Wednesday night of an Italian website's official listing on the upcoming game. The screenshot from evereye.it showed a Dying Light 2 release date of December 7, 2021. Now the question as to whether or not this is an accurate date, or perhaps a placeholder or guess at when the game might be coming needs to be answered. With Techland's event planned for later on Thursday, it seems likely that question will indeed get an answer.

While the Dying Light 2 developer did not explicitly say it would announce the release date, it seems likely this leak could change the company's plans, if an announcement of that kind wasn't already planned. At the very least, the showcase is expected to reveal more gameplay and fill in the backstory of the Dying Light sequel.

The upcoming game is in fact, not a direct sequel, in that it won't be continuing the story of the GRE agent known as Kyle Crane. This game also has a different setting than the original's Harran. Dying Light 2 takes place in what is a yet unknown European city. That the story takes place in another location with new hero Aiden Caldwell hints that efforts to contain the outbreak to Harran didn't succeed.

The game is also set 15 years in the future, though in that regard it's not known whether an outbreak has been threatening the planet all this time, or whether this European city is the hotspot for another surge of the zombie plague. More details, including the potential for confirmation of the release date, are expected at Techland's Thursday showcase.

Dying Light 2 releases in 2021 on  PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
