As announced by the company earlier this week, Dying Light 2 is slated to get a developer update on March 17, revealing the first major news about the game since its indefinite delay last year. Fans are already speculating about what details will be divulged regarding the sequel, but it appears a release date will not be among them.

Coming courtesy of Techland's Community Manager "Uncy" on the Dying Light 2 Discord (and later reported by Idle Sloth on Twitter), it has been confirmed there won't be a release date included in the developer update. However, that's not to say it'll be lacking information, with the dev claiming that the event will be "more than [a] simple 'the development is going smoothly.'"

Talking to the Discord about the Dying Light 2 update, Uncy made sure to temper fan expectations for what's to come. "I also saw some people that are worried we might announce canceling the game, won't happen," the community manager said, going on to reveal that the update will provide the community with more insight into the status of the sequel. He continues: "To keep the expectations intact, I can say already that there won't be a release date." That news will be disappointing to some, but it seems the studio still has a lot to share concerning the next entry in its free-running zombie franchise.

For those who haven't kept up with the troubled development cycle of Dying Light 2, the game was meant to drop last Spring, but Techland delayed it indefinitely and has remained silent ever since. Although early gameplay footage suggested the project was well on its way to release, varying reports later emerged implying the game was having serious issues. Techland has consistently denied these rumors, yet it seems fans remain worried about the title. The latest of these concerning reports claimed that the studio was afflicted by a hostile work environment, with accusations being levied against its CEO, Pawel Marchewka.

As for the sequel itself, the sequel takes place 12 years after the events of the original Dying Light, with new protagonist Aiden Caldwell searching for a cure to the zombie infection. The game is said to have a unique feature that focuses on moral choices, with players' actions affecting everything from the narrative to the world around them. It will also feature the same first-person combat and fast-paced free-running that made the first game a success, allowing players to navigate across the rooftops while fighting a variety of undead threats.

Dying Light 2 is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
