Dying Light 2 developer Techland teased an update on the development of the long-awaited sequel to the popular zombie game. A new post on the company's official Discord channel on Christmas Eve shared that fans of Dying Light 2 will get more information in 2021.

The post showed a picture of a character in the game standing and looking off into the distance while wearing a Santa Claus outfit and included a "Happy Holidays" sign. It was the caption that accompanied the illustration that got people's attention. "Happy Holidays from the Dying Light team," a Techland employee wrote. "We've been, er, dying to update you all on how development has been going. We'll have fresh updates about Dying Light 2 coming in the new year!"

However, beyond the promise of more information, Techland still didn't provide much info. Dying Light 2 was originally scheduled for a 2020 release. In January of last year, Techland announced it had to delay the launch. It's been almost a year now with no new date.

In May, Techland executives had to respond to allegations that the development of Dying Light 2 was a "total mess." Still, considering the game was first announced and unveiled in 2018, some in the gaming community wondered why there were so few updates about when the next installment could be expected. Some did point to the coronavirus pandemic as being a factor in slowing down whatever progress the developer made after the January announcement of an "indefinite delay."

If the last big piece of news is anything to judge, "the new year" could mean Techland will provide new information within the new few weeks. Considering the long Dying Light 2 delay was announced last January, a Christmas Eve announcement asking fans to stand by could point to another January statement on the horizon.

One of the few pieces of info Techland provided in 2020 was that its long-gestating project is slated for the Xbox Series X and PS5. Now that the next-generation consoles have officially launched, it's possible the company has a better idea about when the game is going to be ready. In the meantime, Techland fans at least have a crossover with another popular zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead 2. By doing that, fans of both popular zombie shooter series' were able to play a bit of new content. The crossover was offered a couple of different times in 2020, with the latest occurring this October. Outside of the limited-time crossover events, the company has continued to offer other updates to the original Dying Light while it worked on finally releasing Dying Light 2.

Dying Light 2 is currently in development.
