‘DUST 514’ Trailer & New Details Revealed at EVE Fanfest

By | 5 years ago

Thanks in part to DUST 514 going the route of a PlayStation 3 exclusive, the bipedal avatar/customizable apartment/online mini-game/Sony advertisement/and occasionally cool-event depository PlayStation Home played eager co-host to last week’s CCP Games keynote address at EVE Fanfest 2012.

Much was discussed about the upcoming free-to-play, MMO FPS set in the EVE Online universe – including the fact that DUST 514 hopes to feature eSports functionality in 2013 to support a viewing and betting system over modes like Capture the Flag and 1-on-1 Deathmatch. It wasn’t until the rest of the event closed up shop on Saturday, however, that CCP decided to part ways with a dazzling new CGI trailer for the game.

Intended to exercise some back story on its place in the EVE universe (the PC-driven world that players on the PS3 can bridge to over the course of DUST), the trailer reveals how different factions and races (Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar and the Amarr Empire) are feuding over a monumental new technology:

Apparently, a team of adventuring researchers/scientists has uncovered an arcane brain implant capable of transferring one’s consciousness into a ready-made clone, even upon death. Knowledge is power – and knowledge of immortality might just let you control the galaxy. So naturally, an all-out war erupts over the fate of the device. Do some want to share it? Do some want to eradicate it? Possibly. But we know for sure that some are hawking it as a military marvel – hence the incendiary speeches, grave proclamations, and inundation of badass space explosions.

It will also be interesting to see if any of the  implant’s godlike properties factor into DUST’s gameplay (which is only gingerly hinted at here in the trailer). We previewed the game at E3 2011 and have gone through many of the weapons being used in combat, but we’re still curious to see how it all plays out through the first-person perspective.

For now though, we’re still impressed by the vehicle customization, player and dropsuit variation, and the fact that DUST 514 is charting new ground as a genuine free-to-play console shooter, whose events influence its larger PC universe.

Ranters, what are your expectations for DUST 514? Does the new trailer get you excited for some frantic planetary warfare?

DUST 514 will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in the spring or summer of 2012.
