The recent game Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance follows on from the adventures of R A Salvatore's book The Crystal Shard. It follows the dark elf adventurer Drizzt Do'urden and his allies, known as the Companions of the Hall, and their adventures around the Sword Coast and Icewind Dale.

The Crystal Shard is the first of R A Salvatore's series of over 30 books spanning equally as many years. Because of this, there is so much information on the characters that many fans may have missed and the developers of Dark Alliance have been sure to include many small references to these incredible characters.

10 Drizzt And Guenhwyvar

The main character of the book series and what could be argued as the main character of the game is Drizzt Do'urden. A dark elf ranger from the shadowy depths of the Underdark, Drizzt proves himself time and time again to be a hero of the north.

Drizzt's companion Guenhwyvar is a black panther that lives on the Astral Plane. Using an onyx figurine of wonderous power carved in her likeness, Drizzt can summon Guenhwyvar for about half a day, every other day. She could be on the Prime Material plane for longer but she would succumb to the effects of serious fatigue.

9 Catti-Brie's Relationships

D&D Dark Alliance Catti Brie Fighting

Catti-Brie is the team's archer armed with her trusty longbow, Taulmaril, also known as Heartseeker. Catti-Brie plays an important role in the group due to her various relations with each member. After her parents had both died, Catti-Brie was taken in by Bruenor Battlehammer.

Early on in her life, during her teenage years, she became engaged to Wulfgar after he became indentured to Bruenor. Eventually, in her adult life, she pursued a romantic partnership with Drizzt and the two became married, even a second time after her rebirth where they had their first child.

8 Bruenor And The Battlehammers

The mighty shield dwarf Brueonor Battlehammer is a three-time King of Mithral Hall. During his childhood, his people were driven out of Mithral Hall and he grew up in Icewind Dale, under Kelvin's Cairn, supplying the Ten Towns with well-crafted armor and weapons.

Bruenor took leadership of his clan when he came of age and vowed to reclaim their old home of Mithral Hall from the Duergar that now resided in it. Bruenor also adopted two human children in Catti-Brie and Wulfgar while he was the leader of the clan.

7 Wulfgar's Hammer

D&D Dark Alliance Wulfgar Slam

The Companions human barbarian wields a very distinctive Warhammer called Aegis Fang. This hammer was forged by Bruenor and given to Wulfgar during his service to Bruenor and was part of the reason Wulfgar viewed Bruenor as a father figure.

Aegis Fang was used by Wulfgar during his and Drizzt's fight against the Dragon Icingdeath. Aegis Fang was so massive that it was almost impossible for any under 6' 5" to wield it, however, being almost 7 foot, Wulfgar had no problems and used the immense maul to great effect against many foes throughout his first life.

6 Drizzt's Twin Scimitars

One of Drizzt's most recognizable features is his choice of signature weapons. Drizzt favors dual-wielding two scimitars which have been nicknamed Twinkle and Icingdeath. Icingdeath was a Frost Brand scimitar wielded as Drizzt's main weapon after he looted it from the cave of the dragon it gets its name from.

Twinkle was a Defender-type scimitar which Drizzt wielded in his off-hand to parry attacks. Eventually after being destroyed and reforged Twinkle would become vastly superior to Icingdeath with Drizzt making it his main weapon.

5 Wulfgar's Imprisonment

Very soon after the events of the Icewind Dale trilogy, with the Crystal Shard being the first part, Wulfgar apparently dies. It is revealed that he was instead captured by a yochlol, a hideous fiend often used by drow for nefarious means.

Eventually, Wulfgar ends up imprisoned by a Balor, named Errtu, for 6 years. Once the Companions rescue him it is clear he has gone through some major character changes, becoming more and more distant from the adventuring group.

4 Regis, The Fifth Companion

The main party in Dungeons & Dragons Dark Alliance

The Companions of the Hall from this game only has four members in it whereas the literary companions had a fifth member in the halfling rogue, Regis. Regis is unique among the Companions as he wields a ruby gem with the power to influence the mind of his opponents.

Regis also made a living for himself as a merchant, selling scrimshaw carvings that he had made. Regis also served as the spokesperson of Lonelywood, one of the Ten Towns. Regis was often the target of Artemis Entreri who was contracted to return the Ruby Gem to its rightful owner.

3 Artemis Entreri

D&D Dark Alliance Lich

Artemis Entreri served as the arch-nemesis to Drizzt Do'urden and the rest of the gang. Artemis is a ruthless human assassin oft credited as one of the most fearful and deadly killers in all of Faerûn. Using various magics, he manages to extend his life to be as long as Drizzt's.

Artemis is virtually devoid of emotion due to his childhood being fuelled mostly by rage and anger. At various points in his life he has been forced to team up with others, most notable Jarlaxle Baenre and his arch-nemesis Drizzt Do'urden.

2 Other Allies And Enemies

The Companions of the Hall amass a great number of friends during their travels including many memorable ones. On many occasions, the Companions run into another famous drow Jarlaxle Baenre, which fans may recognize from many 5th edition dungeons and dragon campaigns including Waterdeep Dragon Heist.

Another memorable character from the companions' adventures is the dwarf barbarian Thibbledorf Pwent. Pwent was a Battlerager Barbarian meaning he wore deadly spiked armor to battle. Sadly Pwent becomes afflicted with vampirism which the Companions try to rid him of his curse.

1 The Companions Other Appearances

Dungeons and Dragons Dark Alliance Characters Title Review

This video game isn't the first game to feature the companions of the hall as they have all showed up many times before. They appeared in the Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance and its sequel, which this game serves as a spiritual successor to. The characters all make an appearance in the game Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, an idle clicker game based on Dungeons & Dragons.

The characters haven't made any major appearances in the tabletop version of the game since 3rd Edition, though Catti-Brie appeared in 3.5 edition and Drizzt made an appearance in 4th ed. Various references to the Companions appear in the Players Handbook for 5th Edition, with Bruenor being an example character and Drizzt appearing on the Elf race page.
