Dungeons & Dragons offers players plenty of opportunities to do the impossible, the only limit being their imaginations and a few rules. Casting classes, for example, will employ some very useful spells along the journey. While some are focused on destruction or on healing, plenty of other schools of magic exist as well.

Certain Conjuration spells allow players to transport themselves, objects, and creatures from one location to another. Other spells available in this particular school of magic can summon creatures and objects to aid the party in tricky encounters. More advanced conjuration magic can even create effects out of thin air. For Wizards and Sorcerers looking for the perfect skills, here's the best of the conjuration school.

10 Mage Hand

Dungeons and Dragons Mage Hand Spell being used behind a curtain

Mage Hand is one of the most versatile and well-used cantrips in 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. This spell summons a spectral hand that can carry or manipulate objects.

Players can open and unlock doors and chests while staying a safe distance away, always helpful in case of mimics or traps. The spectral hand can even disarm or trigger traps, or safely retrieve objects. Players can use it in plenty of creative ways. The Arcane trickster subclass and other telekinetic feats can even make the hand invisible, adding to its utility.

9 Find Familiar

Dungeons and Dragons artificer and otter familiar

One of the best ritual spells in the entire game, Find Familiar is a first-level spell that allows casters to summon a familiar. These familiars can take an action per turn, and communicate telepathically with the player.

The familiar can even act as a second set of eyes and ears, as the caster can utilize its senses as if they were their own. What's more, familiars can also act as a conduit for spell casting. If a spell has a range of touch the familiar can act as an extension of the caster's reach.

8 Misty Step

Dungeons and Dragons gnome artificer fighting drow

Misty Step is a fantastic spell, and there are multiple ways to acquire it. Feats, Warlock invocations, and even subclasses make this spell accessible to a variety of builds.

The spell requires only verbal components, so it becomes the perfect escape tool. When cast, Misty Step offers thirty feet of teleportation, which makes it easy to cross gaps or extend a character's movement distance. Misty Step can also be cast as a bonus action, leaving the player with their main action as a backup.

7 Spirit Guardians

Dungeons and Dragons Wizard Surrounded By Fei Spirits

One of the best protective auras a spellcaster can receive, Spirit Guardians is a powerful third-level spell that allows users to summon spirits to protect them. This is a great choice for heavily armored Clerics and Paladins, who are always ready to throw themselves into enemy strongholds.

Players can choose between inflicting radiant or necrotic damage, based on their alignment, enemy weaknesses, or the rule of cool. On a failed save, enemies within a fifteen-foot radius of the caster take damage, and their speed is halved.

6 Conjure Animals

Dungeons and Dragons Orc with eagle

Conjure Animals is one of those spells that, if creatively used, can break any game's action economy and swing combat encounters in the party's favor. Depending on the combat rating of the creature summoned, they are able to call forth one to eight beasts.

To simplify initiatives, the group rolls as one rather than individuals; however, if the initiative is high enough, the group can devastate an enemy. The spell only lasts one hour, but in a pinch, it can work as a way to find the full party steeds to escape on. Creative players will also enjoy the fact that nothing specifies where the spirits can and can't be conjured, so long as it is within a sixty-foot range.

5 Dimension Door

Dungeons and Dragons Wizard using dimension door spell

A fantastic and versatile spell, Dimension Door is available to plenty of different classes. It also has a spectacular range as far as spells go in Dungeons & Dragons, at 500 feet.

Unlike Misty Step, players can teleport to a target location that can't be seen by the caster. Meanwhile, unlike Teleport, the only way this spell can backfire is if players teleport into a solid object. Dimension Door also allows the caster to teleport another party member them, which can have plenty of creative applications.

4 Find Greater Steed

Dungeons and Dragons winged sabertooth mount

Find Greater Steed can summon not only powerful mounts to the caster, but also mounts that can fly and communicate telepathically. The steed could take on the form of a dire wolf, pegasus, a griffin, or even a sabertooth tiger.

The steed exists permanently until its hit points reach zero. Even after that, it can be resummoned using another spell slot or at a later time, as if nothing happened.

3 Steel-Wind Strike

Dungeons and Dragons adventurer fighting lich

For players looking to bring the flare and sword flourishes of an anime protagonist into their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign, this is the perfect spell. Steel-Wind Strike allows players to meld with the wind and strike multiple opponents at once.

The melee spell attack deals force damage, and can target up to five enemies within a thirty-foot range. This is a great spell for players who want to demonstrate smart battlefield strategies. Being able to seemingly disappear and reappear next to any of the enemies attacked is always impressive.

2 Teleport

Dungeons and Dragons adventurers fighting a dragon

Despite this spell's name, it does a lot more than just teleport the caster, as it can also teleport a single object that the caster can see. Teleport has unlimited range; so long as the location is on the same material plane as the caster, anything is possible. Casters with this spell can also teleport up to seven additional companions with them.

There are a few ways for mishaps to happen; however, Teleport is a great utility spell to have on hand. When combat encounters inch closer to total party kills, Teleport offers a one-action casting time that is perfect for quick escapes.

1 Wish

Dungeons and Dragons triceratops and woman

The mightiest spell a player can cast in any campaign, Wish is the go-to ninth-level spell and has the power to make or break a game. With this spell, players can rewrite reality itself. They can force rerolls of enemies or allies, and even returning all of up to twenty creatures hit points. Players can conjure objects, or replicate any eighth-level spell or below, without restrictions.

However, bear in mind that more creative uses of the spell can backfire with a resourceful DM. Players should be sure to precisely state their wish, so that their DM can't twist their words.
