When a Dungeons & Dragons game is in session, every player wants to score some epic loot. That's the whole point of slaying dragons, liches, and other crazy monsters, but the trick is knowing what type of loot is going to suit a character, and what to pass on.

Nobody wants to forfeit something that could be super helpful to their D&D character in particular. Depending on the class, some items just aren't beneficial enough to wrestle other party members over. It's time to look at Sorcerers and magical items that'll go the extra mile when paired with their abilities.

The best magic items for sorcerers are those that'll give them more spells and more Charisma, their most important stat. After that, some extra protection never hurts, since Sorcerers aren't naturally equipped to wear any armor. To give players a better idea of what to look out for, here are several magical items in D&D 5th edition that are perfect, and any sorcerer PC in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign will accumulate some clutch magical items in no time.

Updated on February 6, 2023, by Kristy Ambrose: The Sorcerer's spell knowledge is innate, and unlike the Mage or Wizard, they don't tend to use scrolls and have no need to study or learn their spells, but there are a variety of other ways to enhance their power.

D&D 5e and the materials related to the game include a variety of magical items out there for a Sorcerer to use. The options for armor are often more permissive in D&D 5e, so this notoriously squishy class has more advantages there, too.

Jewelry And Accessories

A Sorcerer carries few weapons and wears little to no armor, so trinkets, bobbles, and other decorative items in 5e are handy for power enhancement.

Pearl of Power

  • Source: Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Uncommon
  • Modifiers: Regain one expended spell slot up to level 3

The wonderfully useful Pearl of Power falls into the "more spells" category of the Sorcerer's three greatest needs. However, what sorcerers really need are more known spells, since the class's main shortcoming is the smaller number of spells they can have learned.

Even better is that it can be made by a character with the Craft Wondrous Item ability rather than being hidden away or given as a reward, making it one of the best Sorcerer's magic items for lower-level characters or beginning players.

Ring of Protection

Dungeons & Dragons Locate Creature Spellcasting
  • Source: Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Common to Rare
  • Modifiers: Gain a +1 bonus to AC and Saving Throws

This one is a classic, but there's a reason it has stuck around through multiple editions of D&D. It's also an item that players are more likely to find than, say, a Staff of Power.

The Ring of Protection is simple. Attune to it, and it boosts the wearer's armor class and saves throws by 1. Never a bad thing to have handy, especially for a class without a lot of armor.

Amulet of the Black Skull

  • Source: Tomb of Annihilation adventure module
  • Item Rarity: Very Rare
  • Modifiers: Use an Action and spend 1 of its charges to transport yourself and anything you are wearing or carrying to any location within 100 feet

This glowing obsidian skull hanging from a chain necklace is just a really nice magical item to have. This powerful item can be dangerous, so it's better if a character that knows something about how to handle magic is wearing it. The necklace can only transport you to a place you've already seen, so escape options are limited if you're being held in a place you don't know, for example.

You can use the necklace six times a day but must make a Consitution saving throw each time. Should you fail, several mishaps can take place, from being paralyzed for a minute to appearing naked at your destination.

Eyes of Charming

  • Source: Volo's Guide to All Things Magical and Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Uncommon
  • Modifiers: Use 1 charge as an action to cast the Charm Person spell

Here's a utility item that also happens to fulfill the criteria of granting the user a good utility spell that they then don't have to keep as learned, freeing up space for other spell choices. The Eyes of Charming fit over a character's eyes, and contain three charges which therefore allow the user to cast Charm Person through the lenses up to three times per day. It's not rewarded or found but made by a level 3rd Caster with the Craft Wondrous Item ability.

These don't have the best Difficulty Class (DC). Instead of using the spellcaster's DC, the lenses carry an automatic save of 13. Mildly disappointing if the sorcerer already has a higher DC, but still potentially quite useful in a tight spot. Plus, it's an item that other non-spellcaster party members can use without having to multiclass.

Periapt of Wound Closure

  • Source: Dungeon Masters Guide
  • Item Rarity: Uncommon
  • Modifiers: Wear to stabilize wounds and cease bleeding

While this item doesn't specifically cover spells, charisma, or armor, it is still insanely useful as protections go. Anyone who plays a Sorcerer knows how it feels to be in battle. All that cosmic power at their fingertips, but one good swing from an enemy can knock the Sorcerer right out.

It's not the easiest class for new players, but there are ways to ease the strain. With a Periapt of Wound Closure, the Sorcerer wearing it (and by extension, their party) doesn't have to worry quite as much about failing all three saving throws and dying before help can arrive.

If the wearer is dying at the start of their turn, the periapt immediately stabilizes them. When rolling to restore hit points, the wearer can automatically double whatever number they roll. Any player with this little charm equipped can probably attest that this is one fo the best magical items for Sorcerers in 5e and a literal lifesaver.

Tome of Leadership and Influence

Toll the Dead - Dungeons and Dragons Best Cantrips
  • Source: Baldur's Gate video game franchise, Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Very Rare
  • Modifiers: 48 hours of reading within 6 days will result in the sorcerer's charisma score and charisma score maximum increasing by 2

The Tome of Leadership and Influence is probably the rarest magical Sorcerer's item on this list, so don't be surprised if it takes an incredibly long time to find, if it can be found at all. Still, any Sorcerer who comes across this tome should absolutely stake their claim.

If reading this book doesn't boost the sorcerer's charisma to a whopping 22, then it'll still be possible to reach that number in the future due to the permanent maximum bonus. Charisma being the sorcerer's most important stat, it should be no surprise that this weathered tome might very well be one of the best things a sorcerer could find in the campaign.

Ring of Spell Storing

  • Source: Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Rare
  • Modifiers: Contains up to 5 levels of spells, either divine or arcane, or even a mix of both spell types, that the wearer can cast without needing rest or material components.

The Ring of Spell Storing can store up to 5 levels' worth of spells at any given time. Spellcasters can store a spell (or five) in their ring, rest up to regain their slots, and then carry around a small backup arsenal of spells on their finger.

Even better, the person storing spells in the ring doesn't have to be the one who uses them, meaning that other spellcasters, even a divine spellcaster like the Cleric, in the party could provide the sorcerer with a spell not even available to them normally.

Weapons And Offhand Items

Sorcerers wield weapons more to focus their power than use for ranged or melee damage, but there are still a few magical ones worth having.

The Bloodwell Vial

Dungeons & Dragons Analyze Blood
  • Source: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
  • Item Rarity: Uncommon to Rare
  • Modifiers: Restores HP, and improves spell damage.

Any spellcaster can use this handy vial, but it's more of a Sorcerer or Warlock accessory. It can be worn as a necklace as well as being held in the player's offhand and has to be attuned to them using some of their own blood.

The power of the Bloodwell Vial depends on its rarity, which is determined by the module being played, the character's skill and level, and of course the discretion of the DM. The player also has the option of using it to restore sorcery points using a dice roll.

Staff of Power

  • Source: Neverwinter Nights adventuring module, Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Very Rare
  • Modifiers: Contains 20 charges of various spells

Instead of regaining spell slots, the Staff of Power does something even better. With it, the Sorcerer will have 20 charges, which they can use to cast a variety of spells. Cone of Cold, Fireball, Globe of Invulnerability, Hold Monster, Levitate, Lightning Bolt, Magic Missile, Ray of Enfeeblement, or Wall of Force are all included as options.

Not only do those spells not count against the Sorcerer's spell slots, but it's also a whopping nine spells that the sorcerer doesn't have to learn, leaving space for players to explore other potentially more niche spells. If that isn't good enough, the staff also grants a bonus to attacks, saving throws, and armor class. It's one of those magical items even more fun than a new feat or skill proficiency.

Rod of Absorption

Dungeons & Dragons Great Campaign NPCs
  • Source: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
  • Item Rarity: Very Rare
  • Modifiers: Absorbs the targeted spell and cancels the energy

Here's another magical item that grants the user more spells, this time in the form of both additional slots and a learned spell. While the rod doesn't technically cast Counterspell, it functions as the physical equivalent of the spell, able to absorb and cancel out a spell aimed at the wielder.

That's a great feature for the squishy Sorcerer, and it does even more. Spellcasters who wield the rod can additionally convert its energy into extra spell slots, up to a maximum of 5th level.

The Staff of Defense

Counterspell Spell
  • Source: Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure module and the Neverwinter Nights series.
  • Item Rarity: Rare.
  • Modifiers: Improves defense and gives the wielder extra defense spells.

These types of staves appear in a variety of places and can have a range of qualities and abilities. These staffs usually have ten charges and can also improve a caster's AC.

Even if the Sorcerer doesn't have Mage Armor and Shield learned or memorized, holding this staff gives them the power to cast these specific spells. Other spells can include Protection from Alignment or Ghostly Visage.

Clothing And Armor

left: Feather Fall spell; right: character stirring cauldron

The few bits of cloth that sorcerers are permitted to wear might not account for much, so that's an even better reason to choose carefully. The rules for medium armor in the 5th edition are also laxer than before, so the DM can give the usually squishy Sorcerer another layer.

Cloak of Displacement

Dungeons & Dragons Jack of All Trades Build
  • Source: Baldur's Gate video game franchise, Dungeon Master's Guide
  • Item Rarity: Rare
  • Modifiers: Causes the wearer to appear as if they were in a slightly different location up to 6 inches away.

The Cloak of Displacement is another defensive magical item that protects the wearer without actually increasing armor class. Instead, the cloak projects an illusion that makes the wearer appear to be standing somewhere close to their actual location, thereby imposing a Disadvantage on all attack rolls made against them.

Related: Table-Top RPGs: Things A Good DM Needs (Besides Dice)

It's less helpful if the wearer is restrained, but that's to be expected. Ideally, while wearing this cloak, it becomes much more difficult for the wearer to be restrained at all.

The Mizzium Armor

Dungeons & Dragons Aspiring Hero
  • Source: Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica
  • Item Rarity: Rare
  • Modifiers: Any critical hit becomes normal, and any magical attacks that require a saving throw against Strength or Constitution only do half the damage.

It's considered to be a suit of medium or heavy armor, so it offers the same protection as any armor of that grade. Plus it's made from a special material unique to the foundries of Izzit in Ravnica, a magical alloy called mizzium.

The Mizzium Armor works in a party situation because it's a versatile piece that spellcasters and melee fighters can also use. The heavy or plate version of this armor would be ideal for the party defender but less suited for a caster.

Hat of Disguise

Zone of Truth Dungeons & Dragons
  • Source: Land of Fate (Adventurer's Guide to Zakhara)
  • Item Rarity: Uncommon
  • Modifiers: Use to cast the Disguise Self spell at will.

Yet another utility item that casts a spell for the sorcerer, so they won't need to learn it; this time, the spell is Disguise Self. The best part of this hat is that it has none of the liabilities that the previous item comes with. No need for attunement and no limits, as Disguise Self can be cast at will by whoever is wearing the hat.

Combine a Hat of Disguise with a sorcerer's natural Charisma, their highest stat, and the result is a spellcaster with the ability to talk their way in and out of many interesting roleplaying situations.
