Funcom is hard at work on its open-world multiplayer Dune game, the return of a brand that's played an important role in gaming history. But while Funcom was excited to reveal Dune's existence in February, apparently the game is much further out than initially expected. Funcom's recent financial report made clear that Dune won't be released for several more years.

While Funcom didn't have any specific details to share about Dune, it did characterize what fans might expect in an exciting way. Funcom brings up its recent success Conan Exiles, saying that Dune will be "a more ambitious and robust version of Conan Exiles," only set in the Dune universe.

To be fair, if Funcom wanted to just put a Dune aesthetic over the top of Conan Exiles, it could do so in a relatively short amount of time. That Dune is going to take a few more years of development shows that Funcom is going to build out a much more focused and robust experience for Dune. Conan Exiles was just the starting point.

The Dune online multiplayer game is known to be the first in a line of video games based on the book series from Frank Herbert. If Funcom wasn't taking that opportunity seriously, then putting out a Conan Exiles clone would be very simple. Funcom clearly has bigger plans for the Dune game and further Dune games in the future.

Dune has no confirmed release window or supported platforms.
