There’s no doubt that Gearbox has revived the king, baby. After development of Forever took longer than it did to build the Empire State Building, hope had long since vanished of seeing Duke kick some aliens in the face. Gearbox has since taken over Duke Nukem Forever and had an impressive working demo at PAX. Then, being as amazing as they are, Gearbox is still going to try and honor pre-orders for the game announced some 12 years ago.
Clearly, Gearbox is in it for the long run and have put a lot of development in the game. Still, I don’t think anyone could have predicted how much work has already gone into it. Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software and the man responsible for reviving Duke, claims that the campaign for the game is three times that of Modern Warfare 2.
“It’s gonna be big! Duke is a big, triple-A title. The campaign is huge. It’s probably three times the size of the last Call Of Duty game. And it’s great through and through.”
Now, let’s think about just how long that is — you remember being glued to the TV as the excellent storyline of MW2 unfolded, right? Imagine that roughly three times as long, and just as fun. Considering how many hours I logged into Borderlands, I’m going to trust Gearbox with producing a long, intense and entertaining campaign experience — Duke’s stripper-filled quest is in good hands.
“Any time I play I play it, at any given moment, I’m having a great time and I want to see the next moment. There’s crazy set-pieces and, in that regard… if you’re expecting this to be a fizzle-out, a low budget thing, you’re going to be like: ‘Holy shit! Oh my God! This is no joke!”
Sounds good to me, Randy! Sounds good to me. Pitchford also said that, “If you’re expecting perfect, there’s no such thing as perfect.” I wouldn’t be too concerned about it — as he said, nothing is perfect. We’ll be following closely on Duke as he edges closes to his time in the spotlight. Duke isn’t going anywhere this time, except for into our consoles.
Duke Nuke Forever will be tentatively released in 2011 (and they really mean it, this time) for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Once it’s out, we’ll have no more ridiculous game delay release jokes. After all, it’s not just any game with a time period longer than the entire syndication of Calvin and Hobbes or the entirety of The Beatles. It’s been forever, Duke — we’re glad you’re back, and we’re glad the campaign is going to be a worthy ride.
