As you may recall, Duke Nukem has decided to make a comeback, as he apparently became jealous when Serious Sam got all the attention earlier this year. One of the many projects in the pipeline for Duke is Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded, a remake of the PC classic which is being developed by Inceptor Entertainment.
Inceptor recently launched a website with both forums and a podcast to begin promotion for the game. Reloaded is going to be made without a budget, so the team is hoping to make money off donations in order to fund anything they can't handle out of pocket. Here is what they have to say about the current production of the game:
"Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded is a complete revision of what Duke Nukem 3D, might have looked like if it was created today. The vision behind the project, is to recreate Duke Nukem 3D, with the help of modern technology, gameplay elements, level design, visual effects and more using the award winning Unreal Engine 3.
This gives us the oppurtunity to take all the best from 1996 and deliver for 2010 / 2011. We are going to stay true to Duke Nukem 3D, but we are also going to be integrating all the new gameplay elements from this century! Thats why this is a "Revision". Many of the locations, design decisions and gameplay elements behind Duke Nukem 3D, were limited because of technical limitations back in 1996."
This announcement is riding right on the heels of Gearbox's decision to take over the Duke Nukem Forever project, and Inceptor also has the license from Gearbox to use the character and revitalize this vulgar FPS. Goofy, macho gunslingers are apparently back in style, and they aren't coming quietly.
It's going to be very exciting to see how Inceptor develops a "complete revision" of a game that many still regard as a classic to this day. Though they have yet to produce anything yet, I am much more intrigued by the idea of integrating current game design into a 15 year old title than just another HD update.
Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded is set to be released sometime in the next year for the PC.
