The heydey of ambition for MMORPGs has come and gone, and there are fewer massive multiplayer projects now. While there are still huge MMORPGs out there, mostly in the fantasy genre, there are fewer wildly exciting ideas for new MMORPGs these days.

All of that may change with the release of Dual UniverseDual Universe will be an MMORPG cut from a different cloth than its predecessors.

Dual Universe promises a massive universe of planets to explore, along with a comprehensive, highly detailed building system. Players will construct everything in the game from buildings and spaceships to the economy and political structure. On top of that, there will be no individual servers, just a single interconnected, continuous session. This sounds amazing, but it also sounds similar to No Man's Sky in terms of promises and premise. All of this is shown off in the reveal trailer that was released towards the start of the month.

While dubious, the promises of the game's creator, Novaquark, have been somewhat backed up by eyewitness accounts of the gameplay. Of course, even if the game delivers everything it promises, it could turn out like EVE Online, with an economy so ridiculous and lucrative it prompted a DDOS attack.

Dual Universe does not yet have a set release date. It is undergoing Alpha testing on PC.
