The announcement of a new Nintendo handheld set the internet aflame today. Everyone's excited about 3D, and the potential games that will make use of the technology. The introduction of 3D likely won't stop with Nintendo, though. What's going to stop Sony from rushing to introduce a new Playstation Portable? Then, with motion control coming into its renaissance this fall, we may be on the brink of a new console generation.

Analysts are already pondering what this means for the industry:

“While 3D games remain on the drawing board and not yet on store shelves, the emergence of new 3D game platforms could breathe more life into the hardware market.”... “Along with the launch later this year of new motion sensing controllers for the PS3 and Xbox, there are several multiple growth drivers for the industry over the coming one-to-two years with new physical products." ... “We expect Sony to announce a new PSP handheld device this spring, and Nintendo is likely to announce an updated console in the coming year, which could also help to reinvigorate the market.”

Wow! These guys are making some exciting predictions, that's for sure. While I'm still skeptical, one thing I can say it that Nintendo is going to get a lot of media attention leading up to E3's reveal of the new handheld. I just don't see Microsoft or Sony letting them steal the show without a fight. I'd expect a big move to try and reclaim media attention in the coming weeks from both companies.

What do you think, Ranters? Is it time for a new Wii, a new PSP, a new anything? Are we on the verge of a new generation?
