Update 1 for Disney Dreamlight Valley is officially out. Some of the big features of this first major update is the addition of Scar along with a Halloween-themed Star Path, the continuation of the main story, and lots of new Halloween and fall-themed decorations that players can craft. For players wondering if they have to focus on Scar or the main story update, the good news is that both can be done at the same time. This guide will show players how they can add Scar to the roster of Disney characters living in the village by completing the main story quest, Nature & Nurture.

Updated December 19th, 2022 by Paul Woodward: For Disney Dreamlight Valley, the Nature & Nurture quest was the first time that players had to deal with a time-gate when playing the game. This was not a one time mechanic, and it is not the last time players will see a time-gate as this game continues development in Early Access. A more lengthy example of a time-gate is the five-day wait between socks when working on bringing Stitch to Dreamlight Valley. The final stage of this quest requires players to water the Orb of Nurturing several times over the course of three days. As such, this guide has been updated to include the final step of the quest after the Orb is fully restored.

Investigate the Elephant Skull

Once Disney Dreamlight Valley players unlock the Sunlit Plateau, they will see a brief cutscene play where the rocks blocking off the front of the giant Elephant skull collapse and reveal a doorway. The first step of this lengthy new main story quest is to investigate the skull and see who is inside. For players familiar with the Lion King, it should come as no surprise that this is where Scar is found.

Talk to Scar

Disney Dreamlight Valley players do not need to introduce themselves, as Scar already seems to know who they are. Scar then informs players of an issue in Sunlit Plateau where the river is drying up and has caused the Pillar of Nurturing, similar to the other Pillars in Dreamlight Valley, to fail.

Without the Pillar, the Sunlit Plateau will be unable to support life. Something is blocking up the river in a place called the Vitalys Mines, and it is up to players to find it and clear it out.

Explore the Vitalys Mines

The entrance to the Vitalys Mines is pretty easy to find. Go toward the river in the Sunlit Plateau and head north, and there will be an entrance to a mine shaft directly ahead. Once inside, Disney Dreamlight Valley players will need to navigate through the tunnels. Some passages are blocked by rocks, but they can be easily broken with the Pickaxe.

While exploring the mines, players will see strange rocks with glowing veins in them. These rocks drop a new gem called Vitalys Crystals. Players will want to mine these as they go, as they will be needed later on in this quest. Other resources that drop from the mine are things like Gold Nuggets and Iron Ore.

Near the end of the mine, there will be a massive amount of Night Thorns, a barrel, and a sign. The sign has a message written on it from an unknown miner that discovered that Root Beer, of all things, seems to hurt Night Thorns and that there are ingredients to make Extra Fizzy Root Beer located at the mining camp.

The mining camp is not far from where players find this message. The unique ingredients needed for this special Root Beer can be found at this camp, along with the recipe for Root Beer.

Once Disney Dreamlight Valley players have acquired all the ingredients, the next step is to talk to Merlin. Before leaving, players should also grab the candy that is lying on the ground. Thankfully, players will not need to backtrack through the winding corridors of the Vitalys Mines. Right next to the camp is a large rock that will create a bridge to the entrance of the mines once it is destroyed.

Check-in With Merlin

After reporting their findings, Merlin will confirm with players that Root Beer does indeed seem to remove Night Thorns. He is confident that a batch of Extra Fizzy Root Beer will easily remove the Night Thorns that are blocking off the water. So Disney Dreamlight Valley players will need to use the recipe in their inventory and cook up some Extra Fizzy Root Beer. The recipe for Root Beer is pretty simple, as it just requires Sugarcane, Vanilla, and Ginger.

In order to make Extra Fizzy Root Beer, players will need to use the Dried Ginger they got from the Vitalys Mines. Using normal Ginger just creates regular Root Beer.

Return to the Vitalys Mines

Once the Extra Fizzy Root Beer has been made, Disney Dreamlight Valley players can take it to the barrel in the Vitalys Mines. Combining the candy with the Extra Fizzy Root Beer results in an explosion of foam that destroys all the Night Thorns blocking up the water.

Once the water is flowing again, return outside, and a cutscene will play. Once it is done, players must use the portal immediately in front of them.

Beyond the Portal

On the other side of the portal left behind by the Forgotten lies what appears to be a nightmarish version of Dreamlight Valley. Players can't pursue the mysterious entity far, but they are able to pick up the object that it dropped.

Once they have the item, Disney Dreamlight Valley players can return to Dreamlight Valley once again via the portal. The next step is to take it to Merlin, who immediately recognizes it as the Orb of Nurturing. Unfortunately, it has lost its power, so players will need to use some magic to restore the Orb.

Craft a Miracle Growth Elixir

To save time, Merlin gives Disney Dreamlight Valley players a recipe that will rapidly accelerate the process of restoring the Orb. In order to make this Miracle Growth Elixir, players will need 1,000 Dreamlight, 10 Vitalys Crystals, and 10 Rich Soil. If players farmed Vitalys Crystals in the mines earlier, then they already have those. Dreamlight can be obtained by completing Duties. The tricky part of this is the Rich Soil, which is a new resource.

Rich Soil can be found occasionally when harvesting crops. Unfortunately, it has a low drop rate, so it may take harvesting hundreds of crops to get the 10 Rich Soil needed.

It doesn't matter what players grow, as anything that can be planted and harvested has a chance of dropping Rich Soil. Once players have the Miracle Growth Elixir, they will need to use it to enhance their Watering Can. After completing this, Disney Dreamlight Valley players will need to talk to Merlin before the next step.

Plant the Orb and Wait

The next step of this quest is to go to the Pillar in the Sunlit Plateau. It is hard to miss as it is spewing dark energy all over the place. Disney Dreamlight Valley players simply need to plant the Orb of Nurturing directly in front of the pillar, water it with the watering can, and then wait.

Players should not attempt to time travel, as this can break the game in all sorts of ways. It is recommended to simply wait the three days and do other things while the Orb grows.

Talk to Scar Again

Once the Orb of Nurturing is finished and Disney Dreamlight Valley players approach the Pillar, the dark energy surrounding the Pillar will be extinguished. From there, talk to Scar and the quest will be completed. At this point there are no further story quests available, but more will be added to the game in the future.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
