Combat in Dragon's Dogma can be a challenging prospect for those just coming to grips with the game. Players will likely encounter enemies that are much too challenging their first time around, a variety of creatures that are only a hindrance, and everything in between. Fortunately, as a character levels up and unlocks a higher rank in their vocation, they open up more skills to meet the challenges of Dragon's Dogma.

Unlocking these skills can be crucial to making combat manageable and one in particular is especially useful: the Forward Roll. Also known as the Dodge Roll, this skill allows players to dodge out of the way of attacks and set up their own. It is, however, a bit of a challenge to unlock and put to use. For those Dragon's Dogma players looking to unlock this skill, this guide is here to help.

How to Unlock the Forward Roll?

Forward Roll is a Core Skill that is tied to daggers in Dragon's Dogma. What this means is that only a particular set of vocations can actually make use of this useful skill. This list includes the basic vocation Strider, the advanced vocation of Ranger, and the hybrid vocations Assassin and Magick Archer. Aside from this requirement, players also need to have a minimum rank of 5 in daggers and a minimum of 2,200 discipline points before attempting to unlock this skill.

With those requirements checked off, players have a few options across the world of Dragon's Dogma where they can purchase this skill. They can head to either Gran Soren Inn and speak with Asalam, The Encampment and speak with Ecbal, or Bitterblack Isle and speak with Orla. Each of these characters have the ability to alter and unlock skills for a player's character. Forward Roll is underneath the Core Skills category and is listed at 2,200 Discipline Points.

How to Use the Forward Roll?

In order to use a Forward Roll, players must first hold down their dagger button skill. This should bring up the player's Dagger Skills in the skill display and clarify what button will cause the character to roll. Depending on which way a player has their character moving, that is the direction the character will roll. Combining this with other Dagger Skills helps a player attack enemies and then recover stamina while rolling away. Hopefully this effective system carries over to the recently announced sequel to Dragon's Dogma.

Fortunately, because this is a Core Skill, players do not lose stamina for using it, making it one of the most useful skills in the game. Dragon's Dogma players often found the stamina system lacking, and this skill greatly improves it. It can be used outside of combat and acts as a rapid means of travel.

Dragon's Dogma is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
