Dragon's Dogma casts players as an Arisen, a character whose heart has been stolen by a dragon. At the beginning of this journey, players are asked to pick one of three basic classes, known in the game as vocations. This choice doesn't have to be permanent, but that doesn't make it any less crucial in Dragon's Dogma.

Deciding between vocations can be just as difficult as settling on a player's character design in Dragon's Dogma but, finding the right place to alter their vocation can be even more challenging. For those players looking to change their vocation in Dragon's Dogma, this guide is here to help.

What are the Vocations in Dragon's Dogma?

Vocations in Dragon's Dogma are broken into three basic categories: Fighter, Strider, and Mage. The Fighter category focuses on melee combat and allows players to use swords and shields. The Strider mixes daggers and bows and exchanges the extra defense of the Fighter for more speed and agility. The final basic vocation, the Mage, wields a staff and conjures magic to target enemies and heal Dragon's Dogma's pawns.

As players level up and improve their skills, they can unlock advanced vocations in the game: Warrior, Ranger, or Sorcerer. These are associated with the Fighter, Strider, and Mage vocations, respectively, and they open up new and more powerful weapons, skills, and augments.

As well as these advanced vocations, players can also unlock hybrids that combine the benefits of two other vocations. The Mystic Knight works similar to a combination of a Fighter and a Mage, the Assassin combines the Strider and Fighter, and the Magick Archer combines the Strider and the Mage. These have their own unique weapons and skills but require players to reach level 10.

Where and How to Change Vocations in Dragon's Dogma?

Vocations are fluid in Dragon's Dogma and players will be able to alter their character's vocation as soon as they meet a character known as Asalam. This NPC is located with the capital city of Gran Soren which is near the center of Dragon's Dogma world. At the Union Inn, players can speak with this character and change their own vocation at the cost of Discipline Points.

It is important to remember that each vocation has nine levels of progression and that these will be preserved even if a character switches over. The skills cannot be combined across vocations but the augments (passive abilities that are unlocked across vocations) that players unlock can be used regardless of vocation.

For those players that have Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, there is another place to switch vocations and this is done by visiting Orla at the village pier in Cassardis. Speaking with this character and heading to Bitterblack Isle will then open up the option to change vocation.

Dragon's Dogma is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
