There’s no question that Among Us, the multiplayer game about teamwork and betrayal on a spaceship, has received a sudden surge in popularity over the past few months. The game launched nearly two years ago, but it apparently took a COVID-19 pandemic and gamers with lots of free time on their hands for the potential chaos and fun of Innersloth’s creation to really garner attention.

Since its sudden boost in visibility on both YouTube and Twitch, a number of content creators have begun showcasing the game on their channels. Recently, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed Among Us with fellow US Representative Ilhan Omar, Pokimane, Myth, DrLupo, and several other top streamers. The viewer count for the three-hour stream reached record-breaking numbers, peaking at 435,000, making it one of the top five individual streams on the platform to date.

YouTube’s Head of Gaming even recently tweeted that Rachell Hofstetter, who goes by Valkyrae online, has become one of the fastest-growing and most popular streamers in the world, thanks to her Among Us streams. Not to miss out on the potential exposure that streaming the mischief-filled game can bring, the power metal band DragonForce has stated that they too are interested in playing the title on Twitch.

The band’s guitarist Herman Li usually plays both guitar and video games like StarCraft on his Twitch streams and has expressed interest in playing Among Us with the entire band. “That would turn into a bit of a riot,” he stated. Perhaps to test the waters, Li streamed Among Us a couple of days ago, but it could only be viewed by subscribers to the channel. Hopefully, if the entire band does decide to stream the game, being able to witness the inevitable silliness won’t be paywalled to keep non-subscribers from participating.

Among Us starting screen

In Among Us, 4 to 10 people can play together online or locally over Wi-Fi, and the goal is to repair the spaceship for takeoff. The team is divided into crewmates, who innocently go about their assigned tasks, and shady imposters, whose only goals are to commit a few sneaky murders undetected and sabotage the ship.

Whenever a dead body is discovered, a roundtable is called to discuss the body’s location and zero in on potential suspects. The team votes on who they believe is the guilty party, and that unfortunate spaceman is then ejected summarily from the ship. The game is won when either the crewmates successfully complete all their tasks or eject all imposters, or when the imposters triumphantly off the entire crew. Needless to say, Among Us is a breeding ground for hijinks and lighthearted strife.

Among Us is available on mobile and PC.
