There was plenty of good news at E3 for Dragon Quest fans who own a Nintendo Switch, and now the developer is going beyond bringing the latest game to the console. Players in Japan will be able to pick up a new Slime-themed Dragon Quest controller to play with on the Switch, providing that they're willing to fork over a significant amount of cash.

Dragon Quest is receiving a controller that's designed to look like the iconic Slimes of the series. A version of the controller was previously released for the PS4, but this is the first time it's been made available for the Switch. The Slime can be displayed on its own as a figure, and includes a treasure chest pedestal that it can sit on when not in use. When flipped over, it can be used as a controller, complete with motion controls. The rounded shape is offset by rubberized grips designed to make it easier to hold. The controller comes in at a whopping 10,778 yen, roughly $100 in USD, surpassing the cost of a standard Switch Pro Controller.

At the moment, the controller is only available for pre-order in Japan. Nintendo Switch users who like Dragon Quest will probably be eager to pick up the controller, especially with more Dragon Quest coming to the system soon. Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition launches on the same day as the controller, September 27th.

The biggest news for Dragon Quest fans on the Switch right now of course, is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo's E3 2019 presentation revealed that not just one but four heroes from the Dragon Quest series will be added as to Smash as DLC fighters, demonstrating Nintendo's usual level of attention to detail and appreciation of the guest characters it has added to the fighting series.

Of course, Dragon Quest fans aren't limited to the Nintendo Switch. Plans are underway to develop the next entry to the series, Dragon Quest 12, though as it is only in preparation phase, it will likely still be some time before any real progress can be shown off to audiences. Japanese fans are also looking forward to Dragon Quest Walk, which looks to encourage its users to walk in a similar way to Pokemon GO. Unfortunately, this too is currently limited to Japan only.

Dragon Quest XI for the Switch and the Slime controller will release September 27, 2019.
