Part of Dragon Quest's massive appeal is the characters, with designs by the legendary Akira Toriyama. The way the characters meld with the story to create unforgettable stories is matched by few other JRPG franchises. Dragon Quest has built up an impressive roster of characters over the years, playable and unplayable. Here are some of the best female characters in Dragon Quest.

8 Medea (Dragon Quest 8)

DQVIII Medea in a dream

Medea is the princess of Trodain, and a childhood friend of the Hero, who worked as a guard. Before the events of Dragon Quest 8, she was cursed by the evil Dhoulmagus and turned into a horse, prompting the Hero to go on a journey to break the curse.

Despite not having many lines due to being transformed into a horse, Medea does play a considerable part in the story as a non-playable character. There are a few moments where Medea appears in her original human form, displaying her graceful and warm-hearted personality. Her singing ability is particularly noted as being impressive, even when in the form of a horse.

7 Patty (Various)

DQH2 Patty at a tavern

Patty is a non-playable character that appears frequently in the Dragon Quest series, usually in her role as a party planner, allowing the player to change out their party members. While Patty was initially a rather generic NPC, in more recent games, she has been given a unique and consistent look.

Patty is cheerful, headstrong, and confident, sometimes to a fault. While she never plays too much of a role in the story, her appearances in games are always welcome and a fun call-back to earlier games in the series.

6 Red (Dragon Quest 8)

DQ8 Red in her chair

Red is a non-playable character that appears in Dragon Quest 8. She is an infamous bandit and an old flame of Yangus. Despite her abrasive and profit-minded personality, she has a heart of gold and cares in her own unique way.

The 3DS version of Dragon Quest 8 upgraded Red to a playable character, allowing players to put her into their party. She gets more time to spend with the main party, showing more of her personality and her unique life philosophy. While her role in the story is still largely unchanged, her presence in the party is surely welcome.

5 Jade (Dragon Quest 11)

Jade is initially believed to be a wandering martial artist, but is in fact the missing princess of Heliodor, who was believed to be dead after running away from Dundrasil with the Luminary in tow. She traveled the world looking for him with Rab, the former King of Dundrasil, finally reuniting him during the events of Dragon Quest 11.

Jade is a serious and confident young woman whose beauty is only matched by her strength. While her role in the story is not particularly big, she is still an important member of the party and an incredibly fun character to use in combat.

4 Jessica (Dragon Quest 8)

Jessica Albert casting Kafrizzle

Jessica Albert is one of the four main playable characters in Dragon Quest 8, and the main spellcaster. The daughter of a noble family in the village of Alexandria, Jessica felt constrained by her mother's overbearing presence and set out to avenge her brother's death by Dhoulmagus.

Jessica is beautiful and stylish, but she is also stubborn and short-tempered. Nevertheless, her insight and courage make her an invaluable member of the party, and her presence in the party is almost guaranteed.

3 Serena (Dragon Quest 11)

Serena is one of two sisters from Arboria sent to aid the Luminary on his journey. Unlike her more boisterous and sharp-tongued sister Veronica, Serena is reserved and polite, and is very rarely shown letting her temper get the better of her.

Serena initially doesn't have much of a presence, being overshadowed by the more colorful members of Dragon Quest 11's cast. However, her development and growth in the second Act rockets her up to one of the best characters in the game with so many great characters to begin with.

2 Alena (Dragon Quest 4)

DQ4 Alena in Dragon Quest Heroes II

Alena is the Tsarevna of Zamoksva, and one of the main playable characters in Dragon Quest 4. She is on a journey to become the strongest fighter in the world, dragging along Kiryl and Borya as retainers. Her adventures lead her to join up with the other characters as evil attacks the world.

Alena is a headstrong character who is always goal-minded, which can cause her to butt heads with her father. Still, she has a heart of gold and cares for her people, such as when she learns that her home has been attacked and destroyed by monsters.

1 Bianca (Dragon Quest 5)

Bianca is the daughter of an innkeeper who appears in Dragon Quest 5. She befriends the Hero during childhood and is one of two (three in the DS remake) possible choices for a bride during the second act of the game. Bianca is a very popular character in the Dragon Quest series, partly because of the role she plays in the story.

Bianca is a tomboyish girl who readily heads out for adventure with the Hero. She appears the most often before the choice for marriage is given, and is considered by many to be the canon choice for the Hero's wife.
