Few could have predicted COVID-19's impact on the gaming industry when Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was initially revealed back in 2019. It would go on to release in January 2020, and arguably, become one of the game's seemingly most impacted by COVID-19. Many fans of the franchise were satisficed with its core content offering, but most would agree that the lack of communication surrounding the DBZ: K Season Pass was strange.
There's little doubt that the time between DLCs has been worsened because of COVID-19, but yet, without any proper remark regarding this, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot fans have been left in the dark time and again. Nothing is more evident of this than the recent release of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's Golden Frieza DLC. It comes with some unique content but nothing drastically different than the first DLC, only offering a couple of hours of content. DLC 3 may be different, but fans have as much reason to worry as ever before.
It doesn't help that fans don't really have any clue what DLC 3 is supposed to be about. It's said to be much larger and have more of an original story to it (though how exactly remains uncertain). Most would agree that it seems Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is continuing the Super DLC story, wherein players would logically play the Universe 6 Saga next. Hit would be a fun enemy to face, but still-unconfirmed-and-yet-denied leaks also suggest that it could be Super's Future Trunks Arc. Regardless, while the content is just a guessing game at this point, predicting its release date is more of a throwing-darts-while-blind game.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's DLC Release Pattern (or the Lack Thereof)
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot initially released on January 16, 2020, with DLC 1 (the Boss Battle against Beerus) releasing in April 2020. Given that it was only about 3 months from the release of the base game, this seemed like a typical release date pattern. At the time, some fans were upset about the amount of content that was added, an understandable concern, but for what it was, 3 months wasn't such a bad time. Many were still upset about the lack of communication, but less so.
Another 3 months passed with no word of DLC 2, and another 4 months passed with no word of DLC 2. Finally, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot revealed DLC 2, featuring a Boss Battle with Golden Frieza, Horde Battles, and perhaps a little more content than DLC 1 release. The wait between DLCs, or even the wait from DBZ: Kakarot's release date to its DLC 2 release date was practically unpredictable. It's hard for many to imagine it went on that long, and while there was more with it, it really isn't enough to justify the wait time for fans.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC 3 Release Date
As such, figuring out when to expect DLC 3 is nigh-impossible. With the release of DLC 2, Lead Producer Ryosuke Hara mentioned one incredibly worrying detail: "I really look forward to announcing more info in 2021." It should be noted, though, that upon purchase of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's season pass in January of 2020, there was no indication that the game's final DLC wouldn't arrive until 2021. With this lack of information and time between releases, it's not just possible the game releases after Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's anniversary, it's likely that it's last spring 2020 or early summer 2021.
Of course, this is mere speculation but given that it's a bigger DLC (even with development like occurring simultaneously with other DLCs), the time frame between DLCs, and Hara's comment, fans shouldn't hold their breath for this DLC. It's not really surprising, but at the same time, more consistent updates for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot would go a long way in making fans who have stuck around happy.
