Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot lets players meet iconic heroes and villains from the anime series. With the sheer number of characters in the main cast, the action RPG setting gives every character, even Raditz, their moment in the spotlight. On this note, fans of the anime can finally learn what happened to one person who all but disappeared from the later story arcs.

In the original Dragon Ball, Goku met and befriended many unique individuals during the first nine sagas. One of these friends was Launch, a woman that shifted between a sweet, caring personality and a violent, gun-firing alter ego whenever she sneezed. She mysteriously disappeared in DBZ except for a cameo and flashback in later sagas. With the world-building and universe-threatening villains like Frieza, Akira Toriyama simply forgot about Launch's place in the cast when stakes were raised significantly higher. After so many years, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot finally explains where Launch ran off to, among other stories.

Launch initially cameos in her yellow-haired form near the Steel Bridge in East Ravine, complaining about how a getaway car she used in a recent heist went off the road. However, she gets a proper introduction during the Intermission after the Saiyan Saga and Vegeta's defeat. Master Roshi sends Gohan to investigate at West City after a woman matching Launch's blue-haired side was spotted there. Gohan doesn't know about her transformation, so a misunderstanding and fight ensues when he sees her bad side confronting a pair of strangers.

Launch then clarifies the couple stole her map, which apparently leads to her true love. Later, Launch's good side is found back at Roshi's house where everything is cleared up and she decides to stay for a while, even offering to make a meal with some new recipes.

Since this intermission takes place before the Namek arc, it explains Launch's absence during the subsequent arcs as her chasing Tien Shinhan across Earth, or so she thought. While this is a major retcon from the Dragon Ball Z anime where Launch found out about Tien's death in battle against the Saiyans, it does provide closure to a character that fans have wondered for years in a way that befits her personalities.

This opportunity was only possible with the semi-open world approach, as opposed to its standard fighting format, in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. For many newer fans, this will be the first chance they get to discover not only Launch, but the vibrant world of Dragon Ball Z for themselves. In the end, there's still much more for players to experience in-game from Namek to the conclusion of the Buu Saga.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
