Dragon Ball FighterZ released last year and quickly became a fan-favorite fighting game and an EVO staple. Hot on the heels of the 2.5D fighter, Bandai Namco looks to hit it out of the park again – this time with action RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Kakarot closely follows the story of Goku, but it also appears as though there will be additional playable characters and even a brand new, original character in the game.

Formerly referred to as “Project Z,” Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was announced in early 2019 and quickly garnered the attention and excitement from DBZ fans around the world. Information has slowly trickled out concerning the latest entry in the franchise, with the game expanding its playable character roster and showcasing new story elements.

Japanese publication Jump Magazine revealed a ton of new information about the upcoming action RPG, and thankfully, Japanese translator Ken Xyro took to Twitter to give fans the highlights. Most notably, Gohan (seemingly Teen Gohan) and Trunks will also be playable characters in addition to Goku. Android 17 will also appear, and the game is getting a brand new, original character named Bonyu.

Xyro didn’t have much else to say about Bonyu, other than the fact that she is “from the same planet as Jiece” and is a “former member of the Ginyu force.” As of right now, it is still unclear how big of a role this new character will play in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, but it is exciting to see additional original stories and characters find its way into the game.

The story of Goku is one that fans know quite well, so it’s encouraging to see that Bandai Namco is including something new for diehard fans. Playing through a fan-favorite story as a well-known hero like Goku might not offer much in the way of surprises, but it looks like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will keep long-time fans on their toes with exciting new additions in the way of story and playable characters.

With Dragon Ball FighterZ widely considered one of the best games in the franchise to date, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has some massive shoes to fill. The games might fall into two very distinct genres, but fans of the franchise still have extremely high hopes after Bandai Namco’s past few DBZ offerings.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is slated for release in early 2020 and is coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
