Bandai Namco's upcoming action adventure RPG, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, makes Future Trunks a playable character. Future Trunks is unique because he developed much of his own fighting style and techniques due to having no mentor in his timeline after Future Gohan's death. Many of these iconic moves are sure to be accessible to players during the Cell Saga when they play Future Trunks and combat the likes of Mecha-Frieza and the Androids. So what are some of his most recognizable techniques throughout his run in the original Dragon Ball Z anime, and which of them are likely to be usable by players?

For the uninitiated, Future Trunks is the adult version of Vegeta's son, journeying from the future to prevent the world from being ravaged the way his was. In Future Trunks' timeline, Goku dies from a heart disease for which modern medicine can find no cure. As a result, when the Androids arrive, all of Earth's defenders are slaughtered, leaving only the young Trunks and his mentor, Gohan, remaining. Gohan trains him, but the Androids prove to be too much, forcing Trunks to use a time machine to try and fix things at the source. Although he only participates in the Cell Saga, Trunks swiftly became a fan favorite, so it is very exciting to see him playable in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

Super Saiyan

Interestingly enough, the first "technique" the audience ever sees Future Trunks use it actually the Super Saiyan transformation. Upon arriving to the present timeline, Trunks uses this form to defeat Mecha Frieza, becoming the second Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z. This baffles everyone involved, and spurs Vegeta further to finding his own Super Saiyan transformation. Trunks also attains Super Saiyan 2 and even creates a new transformation called Super Saiyan Grade 3; a stronger but slower form. Players should always have access to this form upon unlocking Future Trunks, and will likely obtain the upgrades as they progress through the story.

Burning Attack

Trunks' Burning Attack is perhaps his most stylistic move. In order to execute it, Trunks makes a series of hand signs in quick succession, then forms a diamond with his hands and fires a large ball of fire. This attack has shown varying degrees of power, but has always been one of Trunks' more impressive displays. He first uses this technique against Mecha-Frieza and King Cold, so players will likely be able to use this technique early on. Whether it will be an ultimate attack or a regular super move remains unknown currently.

Shining Sword Attack

Although this move was never officially named in the anime, the Shining Sword Attack has been on Trunks' moveset in video game adaptations for quite some time. Trunks uses this technique to dispatch Mecha-Frieza, first cutting him in half, then into tiny bits, before finally blowing him away with a huge, close range energy blast. Future Trunks will likely be able to use this move in combat against other foes as well, featuring swift and deadly physical strikes followed shortly by a devastating ki blast.

Buster Cannon

Buster Cannon is yet another move unique to Trunks, and it seems probable he invented the technique himself. Future Trunks uses this move only once; to defeat the Androids in his timeline once and for all. That said, it has made several appearances in video games since then, and it may make another in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Given that Trunks doesn't use this move until the end of the Cell Saga back in his own timeline, it's possible players will have to unlock this move for Future Trunks through leveling up or completing a quest.

Change the Future

Trunks uses this move to deal the finishing blow on Android 18 in his timeline, and it reduces her to ashes. When performing this technique, Trunks rushes at his target, stops directly in front of them, raises one hand, and unleashes a wave of energy to destroy or heavily damage his target. This technique actually got its name from its inclusion in various video games, each one portraying the move differently. In Dragon Ball Xenoverse, for example, the skill is a counterattack. If the player is hit with a ki based attack while using this move, they then perform the rush and energy blast.

God Breaker

Like Change the Future, this technique received a name from the various video games it was featured in. It is very similar to Change the Future, but it is more of a long ranged, focused beam rather than a short range energy wave. While it remains to be seen if it makes it into Dragon ball Z: Kakarot, having access to a defensive counter would be very useful to players during the Cell Saga.

Heat Dome

The Heat Dome is a powerful technique which Trunks uses to defeat Future Cell. Trunks throws his opponent upwards and gathers energy, forming a dome of bright white heat around himself, then fires a powerful beam directly upward at his target. This move was powerful enough to completely destroy Future Cell, so if players have access to it in the game it will likely be a very powerful move. Once again though, it is unlikely that Trunks will start with this move available, so players will likely have to unlock it somehow.

Players using Future Trunks will likely have access to all sorts of moves for him, but these are by far his most iconic. It would be very satisfying to see these recreated in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, especially for such a beloved character as Future Trunks. This tragic and compelling hero from an alternate, battle-torn timeline will get another chance to show fans what he is made of soon, as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is just around the corner.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be out on January 17, 2020, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
