With the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z came the introduction of fusion. The fusion dance allows two warriors to merge their bodies into one, much stronger force. In the original Dragon Ball Z anime, Goten and Trunks are the only characters to achieve fusion through the fusion dance, resulting in Gotenks. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot aims to retell the story of Dragon Ball Z from start to finish, so players will, however briefly, get the chance to play Gotenks in battle against the evil Majin Buu. Although Gotenks is one of the most powerful characters ever to appear in Dragon Ball Z, he is also very childish and inexperienced. As a result, his moveset tends to be a tad silly.

For those that don't know, Goten and Trunks are Goku's and Vegeta's sons, respectively. As Half Saiyans, they harbor considerable potential, a fact further proved by the young age at which they both attained the Super Saiyan transformation. Their fusion, Gotenks, has all the best (and worst) parts of them both. He is cocky like Trunks and aloof like Goten, but incredibly powerful. Gotenks is able to completely skip Super Saiyan 2, jumping straight to the incredibly powerful Super Saiyan 3 which Goku had only just discovered. But giving two kids this kind of power is sure to backfire somehow, and their techniques reflect that.

Galactic Donut

Super Saiyan gotenks using galactic Donut on super buu dragon Ball z

One of many of Gotenks' crazy moves is the Galactic Donut. Gotenks draws a ring of energy with his finger above him, encircles his opponent with it, then closes the ring around him. This move was capable of restraining Super Buu for some time, and when Super Buu later uses it against Ultimate Gohan, it even successfully restrains him. This is a very potent restraining move and players of Gotenks should have access to this attack early on.

Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack

Gotenks super ghost Kamikaze attack vs Super Buu in hyperbolic Time chamber.

Using this move, Gotenks is able to create ghostly versions of himself. They fly around and taunt opponents, but if they come into contact with anything, they explode. Gotenks uses this ridiculous ability to great effect, surrounding Super Buu with ghosts and dealing heavy damage as they all explode. Previous Dragon Ball games have made this move Gotenks' ultimate attack, so while players are likely to have access to this from the start, it may be a difficult move to pull off. Gotenks' incredible power was always balanced by his arrogance and foolishness as well, and these apparitions are no different.

DIE DIE Missile Barrage

Ss3 Gotenks uses die die missile barrage

The DIE DIE Missile Barrage was used against Super Buu, but Piccolo actually tells Gotenks to stop. Piccolo believes the move is too destructive and that it could destroy even Dragon Balls if there are any near. This technique decimates Super Buu, however he is able to regenerate and surprise Gotenks. Odds are if this move were to transfer into Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, it would be largely innacurate but highly damaging. Most likely this won't be a huge problem as there probably won't be any friendly fire mechanic.

Gotenks' one of a kind techniques are not only incredibly powerful, but also quite confusing to foes like Super Buu, and there is merit in this despite the obvious draw backs. Players are sure to relish the raw power on display from Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, but will his childish attitude and unpredictability affect gameplay in any way? Fans of the dynamic fusion will have their chance soon, as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be releasing this January and features all the main Sagas from the original Dragon Ball Z anime.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 17, 2020.
