Dragon Ball Z is a series that seems like it would be a natural fit for video games, but for the most part, it has been almost exclusively shoehorned into the fighting game genre. For Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Bandai Namco’s latest entry in the long-running series, developer CyberConnect2 went a step further by combining elements of a traditional fighter with the structure of an open-world RPG and retells the story of the entire Dragon Ball Z saga through the life of titular character, Kakarot a.k.a. Goku.

Boasting over 100 hours of gameplay for the main story, side-missions, collectibles, and more, there's a lot of content on offer already in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, but that's not all that fans can expect with Season Pass content on the horizon. And none of that is factoring in the potential of sequels for Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Super, the prequel Dragon Ball, or any of the movies. Bandai Namco has a lot of opportunities with the DLC for DBZ Kakarot, and fans should be kept in mind through all of it.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's Season Pass

First of all, let's take a look at what has actually been announced when it comes to future content for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The Season Pass has already been announced by Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2, and it's available for purchase now through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and Steam, or as part of the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions of the game. The Season Pass includes a brand new story that will be released alongisde two episodes, although it's unclear whether that means an original storyline or an additional one that wasn't in the base game. Season Pass owners will also receive the Steaming-Hot Grilled Fish as a bonus cooking item.

Missing Arcs from DBZ

The base game covers Goku's story from the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, following the events of all 18 mainline sagas from the anime ranging from the Frieza Saga all the way to the ending with the final fight against Kid Buu. Without even touching the prequel or sequel series like Dragon Ball Super, there's still a lot of content from Dragon Ball Z that's left to be explored.

For example, none of the storylines from the films have been included, effectively leaving out a handful of major characters like Cooler, Broly, and even Lord Slug. Most notably, there are two sagas that serve as an epilogue to Dragon Ball Z including the Beerus Arc in the Gods of the Universe Saga which is told through the films Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, and a four-episode finale called the Peaceful World Saga, taking place 10 years later. Most of which would fit perfectly in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

Dragon Ball Super & GT?

There's also the possibility that Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 could explore either of the Dragon Ball Z sequel series, Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball GT told an original story not adapted from an existing manga series like the previous two shows and consisted of 64 episodes. Set five years after the events of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT follows Goku's quest to find the Black Star Dragon Balls after the evil Emperor Pilaf used them to turn him back into a child.

On the other hand, there's Dragon Ball Super which is based on the manga and acts as a direct sequel to the events of Dragon Ball Z, following the same set of characters. Dragon Ball Super lasted a total of 131 episodes and 5 sagas before its first season was brought to an end, and it completely ignores (or sidetracks) the events of Dragon Ball GT. Both Super and GT can and should be adapted, but the likelihood of that happening through DLC isn't very high as both series would fair far better as their own games with Kakarot DLC used to bridge the gap for what's to come.

Datamined Leaks

Leaks and rumors happen all the time on the internet, yet they're rarely backed up by any concrete source or evidence. With that said, datamined content comes directly from the game files meaning that it's either leftover code from cut content or a look at what's to come. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has had evidence for two major story arcs found within the PC game files, one for Broly and one for Beerus. The first leak is for lines of dialogue that reference the film Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, implying that Broly could be making an appearance and the two episodes would cover his first two films. However, Broly wasn't technically made canon until Dragon Ball Super, so while it's possible the films could be included, it's not as likely.

The second, and far more likely datamined leak, revealed that both Beerus the God of Destruction, and his attendant Whis, are already hidden in the DBZ: Kakarot game files. Beerus and Whis are prominent characters in the Gods of the Universe Saga films, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, which works as an epilogue to the Dragon Ball Z anime. While it's clear that these characters could appear in the game to some capacity, there's no additional content or dialogue to indicate whether it's from cut content or future expansions.

What We Want From the DLC

There is still a number of major Dragon Ball Z arcs that haven't been covered, and that's the direction that Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 should head toward in order to make Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot the most complete package it can be, at least from an anime standpoint. Use the Season Pass DLC to explore the Beerus Arc and/or Peaceful World Sage epilogue and tie off Goku's story in Dragon Ball Z with a neat bow.

Outside of spin-off titles, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT are big enough animes to warrant having their own games and both prominently feature Goku, meaning there's ample opportunity for sequels. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot could have at least two direct sequels that use the same naming convention to avoid marketing confusion, Dragon Ball Super: Kakarot and Dragon Ball GT: Kakarot. CyberConnect2 did a great job at expanding Dragon Ball Z to a new genre, and by developing a sequel, it allows the developer to gather feedback and improve.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
