At the very beginning of DLC 3 for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, players will take control of Future Trunks. This time he isn't a sword wielding, Super Saiyan fighter, but instead just a teenager training with Future Gohan. A major emphasis in the story of this DLC is about Trunks trying to unlock the power of a Super Saiyan, but he struggles with it in ways that his main timeline counterpart never did. Players that are just dying to use the Super Saiyan transformation again for its incredible power boost need not worry, as the form can be unlocked for this version of Trunks.

There will be minor spoilers ahead for the third and final DLC of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. For the most part, players should probably already have a general idea of what happens in the story of this DLC since Trunks touches on it during the Cell Saga of the main game, however. Those wanting to experience the story of the DLC for themselves can turn back now.

Just like transformations in the base game of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, unlocking the Super Saiyan form for Trunks in DLC 3 is dependent on story progression. If players check the skill tree for Trunks, they will find that Super Saiyan is among the options. That said, selecting it simply informs players that they must first reach episode 2 of the DLC before unlocking it. This is because players can't artificially unlock the power before it makes sense in the story for Trunks to do so.

The DLC is split into three main parts. The first part features Trunks as a teen as he trains with Gohan and the two try to stop the Android threat together. At the end of this episode, Future Gohan is mercilessly killed by Androids 17 and 18. When Trunks finds his lifeless body, the rage triggers his transformation into a Super Saiyan for the first time. After this, a three year time skip takes players into the second episode of the DLC. Trunks now resembles his appearance as Future Trunks in the main game, and players will automatically have access to Super Saiyan.

As with other transformations, players can upgrade this by accessing Trunks' skill tree. As a base skill, the Super Saiyan form grants him a 25% boost to stats while draining Ki, but this effect gets stronger with upgrades. Level two will cost 1600 of each type of Z Orb (and 8 rainbow ones), and boosts the damage to 35%. Finally, level three costs 3400 of each type of Z Orb (and 10 rainbow ones), and caps the damage at a 50% boost.
