Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot emerges as an action-based RPG revival of the fighting game series. In-game, players also get to take part in epic battles from the anime. In particular, fans can relive one of the most important fights in the series: the first confrontation with Vegeta, prince of all Saiyans.

This battle immediately follows victory in the Nappa boss fight during the story. Tired of Nappa's weakness, Vegeta will leap into the fray to face Goku himself. Mirroring the anime arc, players will fight Vegeta here once in his regular form and once in his Great Ape form as Goku.

Vegeta's Moveset

During both Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot fights, Vegeta will use an onslaught of melee and ranged attacks on Goku. Moving in an appropriate direction will allow players to counter most attacks.

  1. Galick Gun is Vegeta's signature energy blast and can be dodged, blocked, or countered with Goku's Kamehameha.
  2. Dash Attack will have Vegeta charge straight ahead and lunge at the player unless they keep their distance.
  3. Slash Wave fires off multiple ki waves that can be dodged by strafing to the sides.
  4. Consecutive Energy Shot launches several ki blasts followed by a final big shot that can be evaded by continuously dashing to one side.
  5. Assault Rush has Vegeta charge in to unleash a flurry of kicks followed by a roundhouse finisher which can be dodged by keeping distance.
  6. Body Smash involves Vegeta dashing forward to deliver a melee punch, stunning the player if it connects.
  7. Meteor Hammer is a follow-up to other melee moves that deals significant damage and knocks the player back.

Because of Vegeta's moveset, especially the last two moves, it is ill-advised to normally run into melee range. Instead, players should dodge his Galick Gun and other ranged attacks that can break their guard and use ki blasts until he attempts a move up-close. After evading his close combat attack, counter and dash away before Vegeta can retaliate. Additionally, once Vegeta's rage phase passes, he will become immobilized for a short period and vulnerable to special attacks.

Great Ape Vegeta's Moveset

Like in the DBZ anime, Vegeta will use a more limited set of attacks after transforming into a Great Ape.

  1. Super Mouth Cannon fires a Galick Gun-like beam from Vegeta's mouth. Stay to the sides since it can be spammed more than once.
  2. Frontal Swipe & Bash has Vegeta lunge forward to smash the ground using his fists. Keep a large distance since the reach is deceptive.
  3. Vegeta will periodically Jump Up and crash down on the targeted area a few seconds later. Simply back away from the yellow circle.
Great Ape Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z Kakarot

Despite his size, Ape Vegeta is very squishy and closing the gap with Goku will quickly bring him down. Once Goku is done monkeying around with Vegeta, they will have put a weakened Vegeta down for the count.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
