One thing that anime and video games have in common is a love for over-the-top transformations. Perhaps no anime better captures that love than Dragon Ball, since Goku, Vegeta, and many of their friends and enemies all have iconic transformation sequences. These range from small changes in the character's aura and hair color to transformations that entirely change the character's body and powers.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 continues this tradition of awesome transformations, adding one that became popular the moment it was introduced in Dragon Ball Super: T: Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, better known as Super Saiyan Blue. First demonstrated by Goku, this transformation grants its user a massive power spike as well as a flashy blue aura to show off. Here's everything that players need to know about how to unlock Super Saiyan Blue in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.

Updated on August 3, 2023, by Rhenn Taguiam: Now that “Hero of Justice Pack 2” DLC of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 introduces Piccolo (Power Awakening), Orange Piccolo, and Gohan (Beast), now might be the time for fans of the game to create a more updated dream team of awakened characters. Thanks to these power-up forms, iconic characters such as Super Saiyan Blue can finally get a worthwhile partner in heated conflicts against other powerful opponents. However, if players must contend against the potent moveset of Gohan (Beast) and Orange Piccolo, Super Saiyan Blue’s kit may also possess the tools to get the job done. For players who acquired this character, part of their training with Super Saiyan Blue includes learning intricacies such as focusing on aggression and bypassing its Ki Recovery debuff.

What Is Super Saiyan Blue?

A quick glance at Goku's hair and aura is all that anime fans need to gauge his current power level. From a monkey-tailed boy to a Saiyan God, Goku's power has skyrocketed throughout the anime, leading to the moment in Dragon Ball Super when he first achieves Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (SSGSS). Ever since this transformation was first revealed, anime fans have been eager to get their hands on this powerful transformation.

SSGSS can be activated when the player reaches five bars of Ki. Activating this ability has a downside, as the player's Ki meter will gradually deplete as long as they remain in this form, a necessary restriction to keep this powerful ability from being completely OP. While in this form, the character's damage-dealing potential skyrockets, so players can make quick work of opponents as long as they time Blue's activation well. It's also worth noting that unlike Kaio-ken, which causes the character to stagger when the power wears off, Blue causes no staggering, so the player isn't left exposed to attack just because their power ended.

How To Unlock Super Saiyan Blue?

In the anime, Goku unlocks Super Saiyan Blue thanks to his extensive training with Whis, the right-hand man of the God of Destruction Beerus. This unlocking method more or less holds true in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 as well. To unlock the power, the player must train with Whis while using a character who is Level 90 or above.

The player must max out their friendship with Whis. To do so, undertake the 23rd quest, The Explosion of Namek, in which the player fights Frieza. Its difficulty is only 3 Stars, and since the player will be going into this fight with a high-level character, it shouldn't be too difficult, even if the player isn't landing every iconic anime punch.

Choose a Level 90+ Saiyan as the main character on the team and two Whis as support characters. Grinding this mission repeatedly with Whis on the team will quickly build up Friendship with that character, ultimately unlocking Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. Though grinding isn't the most thrilling thing in the world, there's good news: this entire training process can be completed in less than half an hour if the player is diligent. Before long the player's Saiyan will be draped in that iconic blue aura, and opponents won't know what hit them.

Awakening The God Ki

Vegeta as a Super Saiyan Blue

Unlike other transformations in Xenoverse 2, Super Saiyan Blue is an Awoken Skill, not a separate character. Being a transformation, Super Saiyan Blue is meant to complement the player’s existing preset skills.

This is quite unlike the usual trend of separate characters dedicated to signature transformations that possess separate skills. In that regard, fans may want to pay attention to what specific benefits of Super Saiyan Blue entails, mainly when used consistently in combat.

Damage Potential

The best advantages of Super Saiyan Blue as an Awoken Skill are its inherent benefits to Attack Damage (+25%) and Damage Reduction (+5%). In extended incursions, the 5% damage mitigation can spell the difference between defeat and having just enough juice to facilitate a counter-attack.

The damage reduction buff is also decently paired with quite the massive 25% boost to all damage types, not just basic attacks. With Super Moves also getting the same damage increase, players may want to consider more offensive plays with this Awoken Skill.

Ki Recovery Setback

One of the most significant drawbacks of using the Super Saiyan Blue transformation is its debuffs to Ki Restoration (-10%) and Ki Auto-Recovery (-10%), potentially giving a hard stall to a player’s ability to recover Ki for crucial combat attacks.

This lack of Ki makes Super Saiyan Blue quite unideal for ranged builds. However, players may be able to find a workaround for this disadvantage with the proper Ki Recovery buffs, although this will be done at the risk of offsetting potential boosts in other aspects of the battlefield.

Combat Tips

Players who acquired Super Saiyan Blue may be interested in using this form to its fullest potential. For Dragon Ball fans amazed at how this transformation contended with the likes of Golden Frieza, they might be surprised by the way this form also lets them replicate high-octane anime moments in Xenoverse 2. In that regard, some general tips for using Super Saiyan Blue when fighting are:

  • Aggressive builds get an advantage: Compared to Super Saiyan God, the massive damage buff of Super Saiyan Blue in tandem with its damage reduction makes the latter a more viable heavy-offense build. Focusing on hard aggression with high-damage attacks can make the Super Saiyan Blue an ace in the hole.
  • Get a Ki Auto-Recovery Super Soul: With Ki Drain being one of the most significant setbacks of Super Saiyan Blue, players may want to grab an effective Super Soul with Ki Auto-Recovery to ensure a steady energy supply. “Let’s make things interesting!” and “Right, then… Let’s begin the experiment!” are ideal for their Ki recovery focus. With Super Saiyan Blue being a permanent transformation, securing Ki lets players enjoy all of this mode’s other benefits.
  • Stalling becomes viable: Players may find stalling a more effective tactic thanks to Super Saiyan Blue’s increased Stamina Recovery. Floating or orbiting around the air with a few attacks here and there can fool the enemy into pausing to think what players may be up to, and by then players can have enough Stamina for a fierce counter-offensive.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia.
