Dragon Ball is one of the most popular manga and anime series in the world, and played a large role in popularizing anime in the west. Its popularity has endured even after being over for more than two decades, prompting the creation of Dragon Ball Super, a sequel series that follows the events of the original manga. While the series may not exactly live up to the legacy of the original series, it has been a massive success, and the fanbase continues to follow the manga even after the end of the first season of the anime.

While a season 2 of Dragon Ball Super has yet to be announced, fans are eagerly anticipating the announcement of the new series, and hints from Toei Animation indicate that it may be in the works. While it's not certain exactly when the series will come back, those who have been reading the manga have a pretty good idea of what storylines it will cover. There is a lot of new content and plot that a Season 2 could cover, and the longer it runs, the more excited fans will be for an adaptation.

Season 1 Recap

Dragon Ball Super Goku after achieving Ultra Instinct

The first season of Dragon Ball Super starts with Goku and friends meeting with the God of Destruction Beerus and his angel retainer Whis. This meeting became the catalyst for Goku and Vegeta's entry into the realm of gods, taking them on adventures to parallel worlds and alternate timelines. In addition, as the two Saiyans began training under the guidance of Whis, they obtained godly powers in the form of the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue forms. This allowed them to ascend even higher as warriors.

Season 1 ultimately culminated in the Universe Survival Arc, in which eight of the twelve parallel worlds making up the Dragon Ball universe fought in order to ensure their universe's survival. After a massive battle royale featuring eighty different fighters, Goku's Universe 7 won out in the end, although most of the destroyed universes were ultimately restored. The series ended on a climactic high note as the struggle between Universe 7 and the mighty Jiren came to a finish.

The New Story Arcs

Goku vs. Moro in the manga

The manga and anime started running about the same time, and they generally covered the same storylines, though there were a few differences between the two versions. Now, however, the manga has not only gone past the anime, but has also moved on to brand new storylines that have yet to be animated. The first arc after the Universe Survival Arc is the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc, in which Goku and Vegeta are asked by the Galactic Patrol for their help in stopping the villainous Moro, who has the terrifying power to steal life force from planets.

After the defeat of Moro comes the Granolah the Survivor Arc. Granolah is a Cerealian whose home planet was destroyed by Saiyans under the command of Frieza. Upon hearing of Frieza's resurrection, Granolah swears revenge once more, and wishes on the Dragon Balls to become the greatest warrior in the universe. Granolah is tricked by his employers, the Heeters, into clashing with Goku and Vegeta. This arc is currently still ongoing in the manga and shows no signs of ending anytime soon. While the manga has only covered two arcs so far, these arcs are long and will most definitely give the anime lots of content to cover once it comes back on air. Since Season 1 covered the movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, it's possible that a Season 2 would cover both the Broly movie and the upcoming Super Hero movie. However, that's not guaranteed, and most fans would rather Toei not go that route with the new season.

Goku And Vegeta's Growth

Vegeta in the Ultra Ego form

Throughout Season 1, Goku and Vegeta have improved by leaps and bounds compared to their original Dragon Ball Z versions, thanks to the training offered by Whis. The Universe Survival Arc also offered Goku the opportunity to obtain powers outside of the Super Saiyan transformation. This was the highly anticipated Ultra Instinct form, which not only increased Goku's fighting capabilities, but also allows him to react and avoid the opponent's attacks almost instinctively. This transformation makes Goku one of the strongest characters in the Dragon Ball universe at the end of Dragon Ball Super.

While Goku does not immediately retain the ability to willingly enter Ultra Instinct, the manga shows Goku slowly mastering this incredible ability. In addition, Vegeta is able to attain a unique transformation ability of his own in Ultra Ego, which he attains while training with Beerus. The form allows Vegeta to obtain more power based on how much damage he has taken. While these new powers and forms already look great in the manga, anime fans certainly can't wait to see these transformations in animated form. Season 2 of Dragon Ball Super is sure to be a lot of fun, and while it's not likely to come out any time soon, fans are waiting excitedly for its return.
