A recent statement from someone associated with the Dragon Ball Super series has fans anticipating the anime’s return sometime this year.

Shueisha editor Akio Iyoku stated in a video interview that “there's also a chance that something other than the movie will be coming this year too,” when discussing the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film.

This vague hint left many fans wondering if the Super anime series would be making a surprise comeback at some point during the year. The series’ Universe Survival Saga concluded in 2018, and the anime has been on an indefinite hiatus ever since.

In lieu of the anime series, Toei animation has been releasing films that expand upon Super’s narrative. The first film, Broly, was released in 2018 months after the anime concluded. The upcoming Super Hero film will be released in Japan in April 2022.

Dragon Ball: Super aired from 2015-2018, spanning 131 episodes throughout its run. The series started with a 27-episode long retelling of the Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F films that preceded it before moving on to new content. Series creator Akira Toriyama served as head writer for the series, with the original cast returning to reprise their roles.

The Dragon Ball Super manga began serialization two weeks prior to the anime series’ debut. Toriyama writes the manga while artist Toyotarou illustrates it. The series runs in Shueisha’s V Jump magazine, having amassed 17 collected volumes throughout its run so far. The series is currently working through the Granolah the Survivor Saga, which along with the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga have yet to be animated.

Viz Media publishes the Dragon Ball Super manga in English, while Funimation distributes the anime series and films.
