While Dragon Ball FighterZ set a franchise sales record, some gamers may be wanting to return to the 3D fighting gameplay of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. Those fans, in a way, got their wishes when the game added a new story campaign, as well as Ultra Instinct Goku, Jiren, Android 17, and Fu (a new character). Still, the debate between which game is better continues, with a Xenoverse 3 rumor often re-occurring.

However, a new rumor suggests that the next Dragon Ball game will not be a sequel to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2Instead, it’s rumored to be an action role-playing game based on the original Dragon Ball series. As awesome as that sounds, some in the fandom would be disappointed in the lack of a sequel to Xenoverse, which is an understandable reaction.

Of course, as with most rumors, this new one should be taken with a grain of salt. It is worth noting, however, that this rumor comes courtesy of Dasvergeben, a well-known leaker in the fighting game community for revealing Soul Calibur 6, Injustice 2 DLC characters, and the addition of Bardock and Broly to Dragon Ball FighterZ. He also claims that this Dragon Ball action-RPG is in pre-production.

Even with Dasvergeben’s impressive track record, it is important to remember that nothing is certain until it is officially confirmed. This would mean that gamers hoping for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 still have a chance. After all, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 had a solid launch and good reviews. Even if the action RPG proves to just be a rumor, it is still an interesting concept.

While a lack of Xenoverse 3 would be disappointing, a new Dragon Ball entry is sure to revitalize the ongoing debate on Dragon Ball games. The debate on FighterZ versus Xenoverse would be complicated by a new Dragon Ball game, even if it’s not a fighting game, which would be interesting to see. Regardless, there are a few solid Dragon Ball Z fighting games on the market, so this rumored action-RPG could help prevent oversaturation.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
