Dragon Ball FighterZ debuted an all new gameplay trailer for the latest character added to the fighting game’s roster, Trunks. Trunks was officially announced several weeks ago, but this marks the first time the Saiyan has been seen in motion. The trailer packs a dozen classic Dragon Ball Z Trunks abilities into the 45-second trailer, including Trunks’ sword and his staple ability, the Burning Attack.
Given how much detail is in the trailer, it’s safe to say fans are going to love going over every second of the new Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer. Most of Trunks’ animations seem to directly translated from Akira Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball manga art. For instance, the attack that he uses to cut apart cyborg Frieza in the manga and anime is seen in the trailer. His Super Attack, seen closing out the trailer, is the same ability used to destroy future-Cell in the manga.
In all fairness, Arc System Works has enough experience with Dragon Ball Z to deliver exactly the kind of game that goes beyond fan expectations. The developer has made several Dragon Ball Z games in the past, including 2015’s Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden for the Nintendo 3DS. In retrospect, that might have been the game Arc System Works had to cut its teeth on to get Bandai Namco’s permission to make Dragon Ball FighterZ. Though considering Butōden was not well reviewed, perhaps the connection is just a coincidence
Trunks’ addition to the Dragon Ball FighterZ roster brings the total number of confirmed characters up to 7. He joins his father Vegeta, fellow Saiyans Goku and Gohan, and villains Cell, Frieza, and Majin Buu. The roster is likely to explode in size over the coming months, as a fighting game with 3v3 teams has to feature a substantial list of characters to ensure depth of play. Arc System Works definitely won’t lack for source material, though; most Dragon Ball Z fans have a list of characters they’d love to see in the game.
In the short term, those paying close attention to Dragon Ball FighterZ likely won’t have to wait too long for more information. In revealing plans for a forthcoming console beta, producer Tomoko Hiroki revealed that the beta will feature 9 characters, which is more than have been announced so far. Considering the beta’s coming soon, Bandai Namco has some Dragon ball FighterZ announcements to make quickly.
Dragon Ball FighterZ releases early 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
