There are many kinds of fan-made video games out there spanning genre and license. Some take on the challenge of remaking an old game with a new look like the Metal Gear Solid in Unreal project, while others are entirely new interpretations. A new fan project on the horizon is the meeting of a property well versed in fan games and a genre that is entirely new to them.

Project Dragon Ball Demon Breaker is a fan made demo that meets the popular Dragon Ball franchise with the high-voltage character action of a Devil May Cry game. The project is developed by the Saiya-Slash Team in collaboration with ATLAS Studios Colombia.

The initial tweet announcing the project proclaims Demon Breaker to be the "very first DMC-inspired, fan-made, Dragon Ball character action project." With the specific elements laid out, Demon Breaker definitely stands out among the pack of Dragon Ball fan-games. It's definitely the most notable Dragon Ball fan project since the Hyper Dragon Ball Z fighting game.

Often the first response when discovering a fan game are the valid concerns of the project being shut down. The official Twitter account for the project responded to the player concerns and provided the rational for announcing Demon Breaker early. The project itself is more a pitch than a game with the developer noting that the goal of Demon Breaker is to "emphasize" to publisher Bandai Namco that the Saiya-Slash Team are interested in working on Dragon Ball games in an official capacity.

The more pressing issue is the threat of the game receiving a DMCA takedown, a practice that has recently ravaged Twitch streams. The developers responded to these claims by making it clear that Demon Breaker is nothing more than a demonstration of what a Dragon Ball game could be. In a follow up tweet, the account noted that Toei Animation "do not shutdown projects of this scale." While Toei has no history of pulling Dragon Ball fan games, the company is known for being protective of the Dragon Ball license even removing Dragon Ball FighterZ from major fighting game tournaments.

So it's unknown if Dragon Ball Demon Breaker will turn into anything more than a tech demo from some aspiring developers. With the Dragon Ball franchise likely venturing further into the action game genre with this years Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot selling well, maybe a harder character action take might change the pace.

Dragon Ball Demon Breaker fan project is currently in development.
