The Dragon Age: The Last Court browser game shut down in 2020, but some still aren't ready to say goodbye. Fans of the obscure 2014 text adventure have been fighting to save it since before EA pulled the plug last November.
Now, fans of Dragon Age: The Last Court embark on one last-ditch attempt to bring the game back from the dead. The community launched a #SaveSerault Twitter campaign on Friday. Fans hope to show EA, BioWare, and Failbetter Games that The Last Court is still beloved by many people.
Some shared memes, screenshots, and fan art illustrating their passion for The Last Court. Others talked about their favorite experiences with the game or praised Failbetter’s writing. A few newer Dragon Age fan asked for it to come back so they could play it for the first time. Others lamented how they only learned about The Last Court when it was about to shut down.
UK-based Failbetter Games released Dragon Age: The Last Court in November 2014. Failbetter is more widely known as the studio behind Fallen London and Sunless Sea. The text-based Last Court was launched as part of the marketing for Dragon Age: Inquisition and foreshadowed some of the main game’s events. Players took the role of the Marquis of Serault, a small town on the edge of the Orlesian Empire. The game tasked players with restoring their family’s honor by impressing the Devine during an official visit. Along the way, they would interact with quirky characters, suppress uprisings, and unravel the secrets of the mysterious town.
Unfortunately, it is no longer playable since EA shut down the servers last year. However, not all fans were willing to let it go without a fight. The last week of the game’s run saw an organized effort to capture screenshots of as much of The Last Court as possible. This was particularly challenging due to how the game operates, only allowing a set number of actions per day. Still, participants managed to preserve almost all of the game’s events and outcomes, allowing fans to read through them on Google Docs.
While better than nothing, it’s far from the ideal way to experience Dragon Age: The Last Court. That’s why some fans launched the #SaveSerault Twitter campaign on Friday. They hope to convince BioWare and Failbetter to re-release the game in some capacity. They also think it makes a great final farewell to the obscure but beloved title.
The Reddit post announcing the campaign acknowledges #SaveSerault is a long shot. Still, BioWare and Failbetter never ruled out the possibility. So, while Dragon Age: The Last Court might be gone for good, nothing is impossible.
