Yesterday there were unconfirmed reports that BioWare was working on an expansion for Dragon Age: Origins and today those reports have been confirmed. According to a press release from EA, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening will take place in a new area of the Dragon Age: Origins world known as Amaranthine. Players will embark on a quest to discover the true motivation of the darkspawn and unravel the mystery of how the darkspawn continue to infest the world despite the defeat of the Archdemon.

The events of the game take place after Dragon Age: Origins and has players taking the role of a Grey Warden Commander entrusted with rebuilding the order of Grey Wardens. The threats are not all old either as players go up against a number of new horrific and terrifying creatures like the Inferno Golem, Spectral Dragon, and an evolved, intelligent breed of darkspawn. How players choose to rebuild their order, resolve the conflict with the mysterious "Architect", and determine the fate of the darkspawn are just some of the many choices that will shape each player's journey.

The game has a whole host of new features for players to get excited about including:

  • Increased level cap
  • New spells, abilities, specializations and items
  • Five all-new party members
  • The ability to respec characters
  • The option to continue their adventure from Dragon Age: Origins or begin anew as Grey Warden from the neighboring land of Orlais

A trailer for the game was up for about 30 minutes on the ElectronicArtsDE youtube page, but has since been removed. The trailer showed off a number of the upcoming enemies including one of the darkspawn who speak. Also present in the trailer were Alistair and Oghren. A post from BioWare on its forums has stated that only one character will be returning to your party, so speculation on the forums is running wild as players are coming up with theories about who it will be.

Despite being blank when it went live this morning, the official Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening website is now also populated with information about the expansion. Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening is due for a March 16, 2010 release at a MSRP of $29.99 on PC and $39.99 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and will require Dragon Age: Origins to play.
