Fans have been waiting a long time for BioWare's next chapter in the beloved Dragon Age series, but luckily Dragon Age: Dreadwolf doesn't seem too far away. The game may not have a release date just yet, but with confirmation that it is playable from start to finish as of October this year, players will hopefully be able to get their hands on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in the not-too-distant future. Anticipation for the newest entry may be high, but there are some changes fans would like to see in the franchise formula.

Details of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf may still be a little hazy in places, but it looks like the fan-favorite dwarf Varric Tethras will be making another appearance. Varric's inclusion in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will make him the only companion in the series to appear in three games, which would practically cement his position as one of Dragon Age's most important characters. Despite his undeniable significance, Varric has never been a character that players could pursue romantically. Changing this in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf would make a legion of fans happy.

Varric's Place In Dragon Age Canon

Starting with his role in Dragon Age 2, Varric quickly established himself as not only a pivotal character when it comes to the plot, but also as an immensely likable rogue with a quick wit and a tendency towards sarcasm. He may appear glib the majority of the time, but Varric has a soft side as well, which players can see through his friendship with characters like Hawke and his protectiveness towards other companions like Cole. The progression of his relationship with the similarly guarded Cassandra from decidedly antagonistic in Dragon Age 2 to affectionately teasing in Dragon Age: Inquisition is among the top companion moments for many players.

Many of Dragon Age's companion characters are well-written and compelling, with companions like Dorian or Fenris endearing themselves to fans through their character development and personality quirks. But even among a strong cast of characters, Varric tends to stand out, and it seems like the developers agree if his inclusion in multiple titles is anything to go by. However, despite his popularity and his continued relevance to the ongoing Dragon Age canon, players have never been able to romance the roguish dwarf. This is something many would like to see in the next game, and if Dragon Age: Dreadwolf does go down that path it will certainly get the franchise fandom talking.

Why Dragon Age Players Haven't Been Able To Romance Varric

No matter how much they may want to, players aren't able to romance every character they come across in Dragon Age. Romanceable companions and other NPCs have become an increasingly prominent feature in BioWare games, much to the delight of gamers. The demand for some characters to be romance options has even taken developers by surprise in the past, with companions like Garrus and Tali in the Mass Effect series becoming popular options despite BioWare's initial plans. This shows that developers can be susceptible to pressure from the gaming community when it comes to adding characters to the pool of potential romantic partners, so Varric isn't necessarily ruled out for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Varric is a notorious flirt, but despite the teasing nature of the crossbow-wielding thief, this never culminates in anything remotely romantic. There are a few reasons for this, as well as a few fan theories to explain the lack of love between Varric and the player character. Some have argued that Varric hasn't previously been an option because BioWare has traditionally kept romanceable characters to races like humans and elves. Dragon Age: Inquisition expanded these options significantly, with players able to play as a qunari and romance characters like Iron Bull. Fans hope Dragon Age: Dreadwolf broadens the romance options even more, and Varric could be a way to do that.

There is also the complicated history with Bianca, another surface dwarf and former love interest of Varric's. Given that his crossbow is named after her, and it's one of the few subjects that Varric is surprisingly tight-lipped about, it's clear that she's important to him. Depending on the extent of their friendship, Varric can open up a little about Bianca and reveal a few details to the player, and they can even meet her during one of Dragon Age: Inquisition's missions as they help the smith seal the entrance to Bartrand's Folly in Valammar. Although the two lovers were forced apart by politics, it's clear they still have feelings for each other and some players may not want to come between them.

Companions And Possible Romance Options In Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Varric's return in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf may signal that he could potentially be a romance option, but his new position as the Viscount of Kirkwall after he left the Inquisition may not leave him much time to join the player as a companion. However, Varric clearly has some part to play in the next game, and a romantic entanglement could still be in the cards. Like the previous Dragon Age games, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will have a host of companion characters for gamers to get to know. Some of these will no doubt be romanceable as well, and if the next game follows the same pattern as previous entries, it will continue to expand these options across both genders and species.

Players don't know all of the new characters they will be able to recruit to help them foil Solas' plan to tear down the Veil and restore the Fade, but there have been some clues and confirmations since Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's announcement. Davrin, a human Grey Warden, and an unknown female character called Bellara have been confirmed alongside Varric and Solas.

Other characters have been glimpsed in promotional material released since Dragon Age: Dreadwolf was officially confirmed, such as a white-haired female qunari and potentially even a Mortalitasi companion. Both of these would be firsts for Dragon Age, and would also be incredibly interesting romance options alongside a character like Varric. Players will have to see what the future holds for the Dragon Age franchise, but there are definitely lots of reasons to be excited for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.
