In celebration of Dragon Age Day 2020, BioWare has uploaded new stories for the historic RPG series. Four separate authors from the team were tasked with expanding upon the lore through these all-new tales. Fans of the Dragon Age world, Thedas, and its history can explore the latest mythos via the celebratory web page.

Dragon Age is a collection of games popularized for its cast of likeable characters and captivating narratives. Writers from the BioWare team: Brianne Battye, John Dombrow, Mary Kirby, and Sheryl Chee continue the tradition through the introduction of their takes on the world of Thedas.

Rather than sticking to one overarching plot, each short story gives attention to a unique piece of the game's universe. The first story by Battye is titled, The Next One, and has a more serious take. It focuses on Dragon Age's Grey Wardens, as Lawrence fights against the looming dark. The next in the collection is, Ruins of Reality, by Dombrow. Invoking a mysterious atmosphere, readers will find out how the Elves discover something ominous in the Arlathan Forest.

Of course, the stories introduced for Dragon Age Day are not all action and adventure. Kirby’s The Wake sees the Crows mourning the loss of a friend, a demonstrably more somber tone. But BioWare’s collection ends on an exciting note. In the final tale Minrathous Shadows author Chee brings to life a high-stakes card game with a twist. With each story tying to a separate group, there is plenty of secret lore for players to dive into.

It has been six long years since the last major series release, Dragon Age: Inquisition. Therefore, fans of BioWare’s fantasy world are surely hungry for updates. While the short stories are mere morsels in comparison to a full-fledged game release, they should offer some interesting tidbits for players. Since the highpoints of Dragon Age typically relate to narrative, any additions to the universe are welcome, regardless of format. Especially with Dragon Age 4 set to be showcased at The Game Awards this year.

However, it is hard to say whether there are still droves of fans lining up to celebrate Dragon Age Day in 2020. BioWare’s track record since Dragon Age: Inquisition is less than stellar, with major releases like Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem facing widespread criticism by fans and reviewers. And this news is on the heels of two major Dragon Age creatives leaving BioWare. But all things considered, a subtle dash of lore for the series could be just what BioWare needs to build up hype again.
