Netflix has confirmed the release date of its upcoming adult animated TV show based on the Dragon Age video game series, Dragon Age: Absolution. Dragon Age is a beloved video game franchise from BioWare, the same developers behind the immensely popular Mass Effect franchise.

Given the often engrossing nature of video game storylines, a variety of TV adaptations have become popular both among gamers and general audiences. BioWare's RPG games sport a dynamic cast of characters, and the setting and atmosphere have been praised by both gamers and critics alike. Netflix likely saw a range of possibilities with a Dragon Age show, and a chance to expose non-players to the game's dramatic elements.

The Dragon Age TV show was first reported in June of 2022, but recently Netflix revealed key details about the upcoming series. The show is set to air on the platform December 9, and promises to be action packed with an engaging storyline. The show was developed in collaboration with BioWare.

Dragon Age games were praised for including diverse characters, and Netflix promises the show will retain that aspect. The platform has included a wide-range of vocal talent to give voice to an inclusive cast, including Kimberly Books, who is known as the voice of Ashley Williams in the Mass Effect series. The newly released two-minute trailer offers a taste of the show's tragic backstory and introduces elven protagonist Miriam.

Miriam is a former slave who is forging a path working as a mercenary. With a small party of followers, Miriam seeks to steal the Circulum Infinitus, a powerful artifact fueled by blood magic. The series will take place in the mage-controlled empire of Tevinter, and the show will include mature themes such as corruption, power, and freedom. Given Dragon Age's penchant for reintroducing past characters from previous games, it's possible Miriam will appear in the upcoming Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Netflix appears to be pursuing content that appeals to wide range of viewers beyond just fans of specific video game franchises. Many viewers unfamiliar with League of Legends felt Netflix's Arcane TV show was highly entertaining. Arcane went on to become an award-winning production, with a fan base that spans across gamers and non-gamers alike. With HBO releasing a show based off The Last of Us, and Netflix compiling a small library of game to screen adaptations, it's clear that the often complex and engaging worlds presented in video games are equally enticing when adapted for TV, for a diverse variety of viewers.

Dragon Age: Absolution will be streaming on Netflix December 9.
