BioWare has officially revealed Dragon Age II, the sequel to one of the best games of 2009. Knowing Bioware, we can expect a stellar game that will hopefully impress much like the original. How is BioWare able to create so much post-release content for Origins and work on a full-fledged sequel at the same time?

In addition to the announcement, BioWare has posted a number of new details about the sequel, which you can read right here:

  • Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make.
  • Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land.
  • Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior.
  • Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go.
  • Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style.

Dragon Age 2 - Gameinformer

I'm trying to take this news as calmly as possible. Dragon Age: Origins is such an amazing game, and I know that Dragon Age II can't have a release date any time soon, so it's probably for the best to just chill. Still, I have one idea incessantly bouncing around in my head, "Co-op, co-op, co-op, co-op, co-op, co-op, co-op."

Reading between the lines a little bit, there might be a hint at a Dragon Age: Origins - Dragon Age II connection. The fact that DA2 will span "an entire decade" implies that the hero might have a bit lengthier of a life than your typical human. Do we know of a certain witch that might be having a child sometime soon? A witch that likely wandered off to an land unknown? A baby that might have the soul of an Arch-Demon held inside of him? Indeed!

Beyond that detail BioWare seems to be keeping all the secrets to themselves. I think "dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle" sounds interesting, but I'm wary that they may take away some of the strategic feel of Dragon Age in an effort to make the game more action oriented. We'll have to wait for August's edition of Gameinformer to find out, I suppose.

What do you think, Ranters? Excited for Dragon Age II? Surprised they've made the announcement so soon? When do you think we'll be seeing a release date for the sequel?

Dragon Age II will be coming to to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
