Nintendo's forays into the mobile gaming market have seen mixed success, with some titles being hits and others failing to generate much interest. After releasing only one mobile game in all of 2018 (not counting the Pokemon licensed spinoffs), Nintendo has announced the release date for its first mobile game of 2019 in the form of Dr. Mario World, which will be coming to iOS and Android mobile devices next month.

Dr. Mario World, which will play similarly to Candy Crush Saga, will launch on July 10. Unlike Super Mario Run, which Nintendo sold as a premium game, Dr. Mario World is a free-to-play title with microtransactions. Players will be able to purchase in-game currency like diamonds that can be spent on things like more lives and new playable characters. Additionally, coins that are earned in-game can be spent on these purchases as well.

Besides the titular Dr. Mario himself, players will be able to add other doctors from the Mushroom Kingdom to their roster of playable characters. It seems as though Peach, Yoshi, and Toad have all managed to get their PhDs, as they're all apparently medical doctors now. Each character will be defined by their own unique special ability that will help players complete puzzles and advance to the next level in the game.

Since Candy Crush Saga made an absurd amount of money using similar monetization practices, it makes sense for Nintendo to do the same thing with Dr. Mario World. However, it remains to be seen if fans will be all that enthusiastic about playing yet another Candy Crush clone just because it has Nintendo characters in it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mario World isn't the only mobile game Nintendo has in the pipeline. The company also has the Mario Kart Tour mobile game in the works, which is expected to launch for both iOS and Android later this year. Plus, it was reported back in 2017 that Nintendo had a Legend of Zelda mobile game in development as well, though that has yet to be officially announced.

Hopefully Dr. Mario World can keep Nintendo fans busy while they wait for news on the Big N's other mobile game projects.
