The Esports Awards took place a couple of weeks ago, recognizing many influential individuals in the competitive gaming industry. While the event had multiple categories to honor all sorts of roles in Esports, perhaps one of the most popular awards related to Streamer of the Year. Among those people nominated for the 2021 award was YouTube star Dr Disrespect.

As one of the most popular names on YouTube, it is no wonder that Dr Disrespect was nominated for the award. The streamer frequently pulls in tens of thousands of views playing a variety of first-person shooters, such as Call of Duty: Warzone and Halo Infinite. However, despite his impressive following and unforgettable appearance, he failed to capture Streamer of the Year honors. While it wouldn’t seem like a big deal considering the impressive list of talented streamers nominated for the award, recent comments from the Doc suggested otherwise.

During a recent live stream, Dr Disrespect discussed his displeasure with the event. The topic arose after a viewer asked him if he had received his Esports Awards. Even behind his red-tinted shades, it was obvious that the subject upset him. This question sent the streamer into a rant about the show, not so subtly suggesting that he wanted no part with future events. “Don’t even involve me whatsoever!” he said. He went on to say how the event only served to damage his credibility.

The reasons for Dr Disrespect’s displeasure with the Esports Awards went beyond simply not winning Streamer of the Year. The controversy regarding the event stemmed from Twitch regulations regarding the live stream for the show. The streamer brought up two past incidents involving the event. According to the Doc, the show dropped him in 2020 due to his ban from Twitch. And while he was nominated in 2021, the nominations video for Streamer of the Year muted his voice and cut out his face. This was in stark contrast to the rest of the nominees' segments that maintained their audio and showed them streaming.

The issues surrounding the Esports Awards originated from last year when Dr Disrespect still streamed on Twitch. After recently signing a reportedly multi-million dollar deal with the streaming platform, the company only a few months later banned the streamer. As a result, content creators on Twitch were forbidden from showing the Doc on stream.

It will be interesting to see if these comments from Dr Disrespect affect fan reception to the event moving forward. Regardless, it seems like a safe bet to assume that the Doc won’t be appearing in the Esports Awards ceremony in the future.
