Last year, Dr Disrespect announced he was forming a new AAA game development studio called Midnight Society. Although Doc may be best known as a YouTube streamer now, many also know that he used to work on Call of Duty, and so this announcement wasn’t entirely out of left field. Nothing is known about the video game Midnight Society is working on, obviously, but that doesn’t mean some fans are keeping track of the studio’s moves.

However, one recent announcement by Dr Disrespect and Midnight Society has received a lot of backlash online, and that is the inclusion of NFTs. Many major gaming companies have announced NFTs, just to make an about-face when hit with the huge backlash. Doc has defended this inclusion, stating that no one has to buy NFTs to play the game and explaining it’s a Founders Pass of sorts, in regard to the development of its game.

Many have, in one way or another, commented on this NFT integration, and popular Twitch/World of Warcraft streamer Asmongold has too, having called NFTs a scam and questioning their integration here. Commenting on a recent video on Midnight Society’s NFTs, Asmongold commented that he believes their inclusion is ultimately a mistake and something bad for the Doc. He goes on to say how a content creator has to know how they are perceived—for example, Asmongold is almost synonymous with World of Warcraft, as Ninja is to Fortnite, even though they play or have played other games—and that people’s perception here might hurt Doc.

“He is a big content creator and, to a certain degree, authentic about who he is—even though who he is is a joke.” Asmongold is likely referring to the Doc’s over-the-top persona here and continued, “if you remove and change that authenticity into doing something like NFTs or whatever, that really hurts people’s perception because it is fundamental to the image that he’s created.”

Asmongold doesn’t seem 100% convinced that the Doc is excited about or heavily invested in the NFTs, either. Instead, he believes it may be due to the marketing, production, or development teams wanting to incorporate them, but that puts Doc in a certain position as “he’s the face of the product, he has to kind of defend it. It sucks to be in that position, and that’s just what happens when you’re in a big organization.”

As it stands, no one really knows Doc’s personal feelings on NFTs and, with their inclusion in his in-development title, it’s not likely to ever be revealed. It could be that Doc is all for them or he’s all against them, but he’s invested a lot in Midnight Society either way. What comes of the game and its NFTs remains to be seen, but the Doc has shared ideas for games before—such as a vertical battle royale game.
