After plenty of rumors and speculation, Activision finally revealed Call of Duty: Vanguard to be the official next iteration of the franchise not too long ago. Call of Duty: Vanguard is looking to be a classic experience, complete with a single-player campaign, multiplayer offerings, and a zombies mode (co-developed with Treyarch). Of course, every game needs something new, and for Vanguard, that’s Champion Hill.

Touted as the new iteration of Gunfight, Vanguard sees players team up and go head-to-head in a series of matches in a multi-arena survival tournament. The last one standing wins, having beaten every other team on the way to the top. It remains to be seen how public opinion of it shifts between now and launch, as it has its early supporters and detractors, but Dr Disrespect’s concern for Vanguard's Champion Hill mode goes a little deeper than what it does or doesn’t get right.

Although the Doc was initially critical of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s reveal due to its lack of hands-on content (since it was inside Warzone), getting to actually play something has led to some praise. Dr Disrespect considers the concept of Champion Hill to be “cool” and “fun” but is seemingly worried about its longevity.

Like the 1v1, the 2v2, the 3v3…you kind of play it, you feel it out for a little bit, it’s cool and then it’s like ‘what’s the bigger agenda?’” It’s ultimately a question of what about Champion Hill will keep Call of Duty: Vanguard players returning to it and what the game mode can lead to. In passing, the doc has a few musings about what could take Champion Hill to the next level, like integrating elements of Champion Hill into Warzone’s BR or Vanguard’s MP. To hear the doc say it in own words, check out the video below around the 2:18:40 timestamp.

He even mentions a ranked system but doesn’t seem sure if such a thing would still be interesting enough for Champion Hill. Overall, the goal per Activision is to create a gameplay environment where “tactics and strategy combine with quick-action, close-quarter gunplay.” Watching Dr Disrespect play it or playing it for one’s self quickly reveals these elements of the game mode, but when the "new" polish wears off, what remains?

The good news is that this is just an alpha and the full release of Call of Duty: Vanguard is still a couple of months away. As an alpha, there are still elements about Champion Hill that are unknown and could potentially answer the Doc’s question about what the “bigger agenda is.” At the same time, Vanguard could have shown its full hand and what fans see is what fans will basically get. Either way, fans don’t have to wait too long to find out.

Call of Duty: Vanguard releases November 5 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
