Bethesda’s E3 2017 showcase was being watched by fans around the world, hoping for some tantalizing new releases from the acclaimed publisher. The showcase itself pulled something interesting out of the bag immediately, with the announcement of two intriguing VR titles. The first of these was DOOM VFR.

The announcement was made for the title through the reveal of an inaugural trailer for DOOM VFR. Once again, players will be able to take on the hordes of hell, but this time with the added intensity of the use of virtual reality. DOOM VFR will be available on both HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.

Although Bethesda did not reveal much more about the title, it does seem as though the game may well be an entirely new project, rather than simply a VR port of the impressive DOOM title that launched in 2016. As for the name itself, it’s clear what the ‘V’ and ‘R’ stand for, and those wondering about the ‘F’ should think long and hard about the name of a particularly well-known weapon from the DOOM franchise.

It seems likely that DOOM VFR was one of those 7 new Bethesda projects that the publisher has previously teased, and although it’s not one of the games that fans of Bethesda might have been long waiting for, it will be interesting to see DOOM in a VR setting – particularly if it does happen to act as a standalone game from the 2016 version. Here’s hoping that it lives up to the expectations set by the last DOOM title.

Not only was DOOM VFR not the only game showcased by Bethesda in its E3 2017 event, but it was not even the only virtual reality title. DOOM‘s Bethesda bedfellow Fallout┬áhas long been confirmed for a virtual reality experience of its own, but Fallout 4 VR received its own trailer as part of E3 2017. Meanwhile, another classic id Software franchise also was a focus of Bethesda, through a cinematic trailer for Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.
