Now that Doom Eternal has been out for some time and everyone's had a chance to endure its punishing difficulty, it's time to ask the prime question that's on everyone's mind: How do the likes of the Icon of Sin and The Gladiator fair up to the other bosses in the Doom franchise?

Everyone knows that Doom Eternal was difficult but that doesn't mean that the other installments in the franchise didn't also offer a challenge. From a series that's been ongoing for almost 30 years, there are a lot of bosses to pick from. Here are the hardest bosses from the Doom franchise, ranked.

10 Hell Guards

The Hell Guards were the new generation's experiment into new territory. Sure, players enjoyed the nostalgia of the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind, but the Hell Guards were uncharted territory. Armed with an impenetrable shield and a staff hurling projectiles, this is a boss battle that requires some calculations.

Once the first one is defeated, it's not over yet. Soon, players will be facing off against two of them, each with their own specific attacks. While both of them don't have shields, players aren't exactly able to take a nap either. Don't underestimate these guards, they're the real deal.

9 The Gladiator

This boss battle was probably more cinematic than it was difficult, which makes it a little disappointing compared to the other bosses in Doom Eternal. This battle has two phases, one where the Gladiator uses a shield and another where he dual-wields maces. However, this doesn't really matter because his combat style is very similar to the Marauder's.

Wait until the green eyes flash, shoot to stagger and then hit him with a glory punch to take out a chunk of his health. Sure, he does have attacks that will knock players down a peg but most should be able to quickly figure out his strategy.

8 Cyberdemon

Let's talk about both boss battles against the Cyberdemon because there are actually two times players face off against him; Doom and Doom 3. In Doom, there are two phases to the battle, one in the lab and one that transports you to Hell. In the first phase, the Cyberdemon has an unpredictable set of attacks like missile barrages and a devastating hand laser. The second phase regenerates the Cyberdemon as a stronger form with harder-hitting attacks that are a pain to dodge.

In Doom 3, Doomguy is in for a completely different battle. For one, regular weapons do no damage, as the Soul Cube must be used instead. Also, after every use of the Soul Cube, it has to be recharged by killing other demons. Hopefully, you are good at dodging attacks because you will need to do so while running around, killing demons.

7 Maledict

Who was not disappointed to learn the newly incarnated Dr. Betruger could not be fought in Doom 3? Well, the expansion game finally provided that opportunity and it was a memorable battle. Much like the battle with the Cyberdemon, players will need to use the Artifact (replacing the Soul Cube) and also take advantage of the Helltime power to achieve better accuracy.

However, using the Artifact early on won't help much against Maledict's meteor attack. The Helltime power is limited, so it's important to learn Maledict's strategy to make the best use of it. No matter what though, it will be a struggle for survival.

6 Doom Hunters

The first boss encountered in Doom Eternal is a doozy. Much like the Hell Guards, the Doom Hunter is equipped with a shield that makes him invulnerable to damage; he fires homing missiles and his chainsaw attack will brutalize your health. However, players may be able to get the hang of his strategy enough to get clinch the win.

After finally defeating the Doom Hunter, Doomguy is sent down a chute to a whole new arena where he now has to fight two of these things. All the while, wave after wave of demons are barging him with attacks.

5 Sabaoth

Armed with a BFG, Sabaoth is easily the hardest boss in Doom 3. After a demonic transformation, Sergeant Kelly turns into tank-like monstrosity wielding the big you-know-what gun. This guy is no joke with his high amount of health, machine gun, and fast mobility. Not to mention, getting hit with his BFG blast is instant death.

Sabaoth moves quickly around the lab, so not only is shooting at him a challenge but if he gets too close, he'll devastate Doomguy with his clawing attack. Stock up for this battle because you'll need all the help you can get.

4 Khan Maykr

This battle is infuriating. Not because the boss herself is difficult, but because players will have trouble holding on to their ammo supply. Throughout the other boss battles in Doom Eternal, there have always been a bunch of enemies that Doomguy can chainsaw. While they are also present here, they are very sparse.

While avoiding the Khan Maykr's attacks and ground traps, players have to wander around the field trying to refill the ammo supply for homing weapons. Why homing weapons? Because Khan Maykr is very difficult to hit. Armed with six health bars, players have to deplete her shield down so that they can blood punch her. If not done quickly enough, her shield will replenish.

3 Spider Mastermind

Spider Mastermind DOOM

While the other boss battles in Doom offered up some degree of challenge, the Spider Mastermind will separate the adults from the kids. The battle begins simple enough – the Spider Mastermind shoots projectiles at Doomguy, including a devastating laser attack. However, once her health is down by 5o%, the real challenge begins.

She will begin electrifying the floor that will demolish the player's health. While there are pillars that can be used to avoid the ground, she can also spike those too. Once the Spider Mastermind is down to her last leg, the entire screen will be engulfed in laser and electricity.

2 Mother Demon

Doom 64 has a lot of Doom fans split. Some say that it's an endearing chapter in the franchise that keeps more of the horror tone, while others criticize the poor level design and its mediocre feel compared to previous titles. However, regardless of someone's feelings towards the game, it is hard to deny that the final boss does deliver a rather challenging fight.

Being unprepared for this battle means certain death. However, if all three of the demon keys are used in the battle, this makes the fight an easy experience. If they are not used, her flame attack will launch Doomguy all over the battlefield. Her difficulty is based on how thorough players are throughout the game.

1 Icon Of Sin

Like other bosses on this list, there are two phases to this battle in Doom Eternal. During the first phase, Doomguy needs to shoot the Icon of Sin's armor to expose his body, which allows his body to be destroyed during the second phase. Icon of Sin has a mountain of health and his unpredictable attacks are brutal, however, that's not the hardest part about this boss battle.

While fighting the boss, hordes of demons attack the player. Staggering for even a moment could mean death. Granted, there are energy swords and BFG ammo drops all over the battlefield, but they won't help for long. While trying to keep the demon hordes at bay, players have to find a brief window of opportunity to attack the Icon of Sin.
